As evidenced by Rafe's Gallery yesterday, we've got a LG KT-610 at AAS Towers, and I've been trying it over the last week. Cheaply put together in almost every respect, the price is sadly the only impressive thing about this qwerty clamshell. Nice idea, but shame about the implementation - here's my full KT-610 review.
Read on in the full article.
Well if it's a phone suitable for the older generation, that could definitely be a winner.
Question is, as it is S60, can we go in and remove all the other applications - My Grandparents seriously ONLY want calls and texts. ANY other icons are just going to confuse things..

...then do NOT buy them a smartphone.
Just get the most basic phone model there is, something that costs 40 euros or so.
Alternatively, if they're unable to use those basic phones, get a specialist model aimed at the elderly. There's a company called Doro which does models like this:

By the way Steve, this review reads like it should have an even lower score... 😊
Well, it can't give it TOO low a score. After all, it's still a S60 smartphone that can run 90% of applications and games. And it's got a GPS and cam and qwerty keyboard.
So it's not THAT shabby 8-)

Thanks for the stellar advice there Tizer. Did you read Steve's article ..or even just look at the pictures?
It's being recommended as a phone for the older generation because it's a basic phone on the outside (for easy calls) & a QWERTY KEYBOARD on the inside (for easy texts).
A basic 40 euros phone is NOT going to do have that.
One place to get the phone is TIM in Italy, at least the KT-615 variant with the prettier silver design for the cover phone -

TIM is major phone operator in Italy, and the 615 is in their online shop here for just Euro 249 -

If those Doro phones are designed for the elderly, why on earth do they use negative displays? They are notorious for being an implementation of style over function. Standard positive displays are much easier to read for people with poor eyesight.
Just got a KT610 to try from S60.com.
First impressions are all the same as you: it cannot be an E90 competitor at all, the most annoying thing I found is in both the displays: they are both too small for me, ok I have been using N96 and N95 8GB for months, together with an iPhone, so maybe not much can compete 😊
I am going to try it in the next days, so... is there somebody out there with a KT610 that can suggest me something to try? 😉
p.s. any ideas on how to check if the firmware inside is the latest? The phone info says v10b, while *#0000# gives also a date: 06-24-08 KT610 PYXIS
For the most part, I live off of the stock applications that come on the S60 ohones (calender, contacts, notes) and I don't use it very much with other applications, except 4.
SMS Export from S60.com, YBrowser, cCAM, and Screenshot are a must for me.
I work in retail and conduct most of my business through SMS or email. At the end of the day, I need to turn in all SMS and emails to be filed away on the computer. Email is simple, but I use SMS Export for all my texts.
Does anyone know for sure, or can you Steve, do me the favor of checking if these four applications are working perfectly on the KT 610?
If they are, I'm getting one the same day i get my answer.
Help.... Where to download the last firmware and the drive for xp?
Thanks in advance...
Hello,
This phone is crappy! I got this phone for Christmas this year to replace my Three video phone and let me tell you it is horrible. I cannot for the life of me get it to go online, set up any type of connection, log on to the supposed hi-speed internet just about anything this phone says it can do, I can't do! Here in Italy it cost 299 euro, over priced! There are no "short cuts" as with my other phone. It is hard to reach the contacts you have on you SIM chip. It is not the ideal phone for people who don't want to spend hours trying to figure out how it works! Also the "help" button does anything but help. One more added bonus... the battery does NOT last as long as it is said to last.
My opinion is this phone is worthless!
I am 25 and cannot for the life of me figure out how this phone works...oh yeah it is the LG KT 615 it that makes a difference?
I dont know if I need a step by step walk through or a different phone, all I know is this phone gets on my nerves.
I have tried to read the directions, however they are in Italian and I read/speak English...so thats a no go for me. I utterly hate the phone. I want my 300.00 euro back!
wow, did any of you have used this phone at a point so you can judge the phone objectively? playing with it a few minutes doesn't justify any of you to say that this phone is bad.
did any of you read the manual before you do anything with this phone?
i'm a user of kt610. and it's not an elderly phone, besides everyone is getting old. if you are saying that this is not nokia, then it is not, but why would you spend on nokia that cost twice than kt610 and only got wifi and bigger memory for the extra equipment? even e63 will cost you at least 100USD more. (unlocked pricing on both phones). i rather bought a 8GB SDHC, than shell out those kind of cash.
i think the goal of this device is low cost symbian phone. and that's it. it got all the bells and whistle needed for business user. but not enough for multimedia freaks (except the sound quality, the sound performance is actually acceptable).
this is what i think:
1. slow performance? no, the performance is the same with other phones, either smart phone or not. opening some programs only takes 1-4 seconds. what is slow about that?
2. no wi-fi? so what, if you always take your email with you, you would use the HSDPA data plan to make sure your email will get to you as soon as possible. I would not go to strabuck or some sort just to get my free wifi for checking my email everytime.
3. small dislay? yes it is, if you can't read it, then i suggest to increase the font on this thing. it is a built in feature
what is superb about this phone is, it can connect as media player, sync, usb disk, modem. GPS is great. sound quality is great. keypad is so nice to use. sturdy, much sturdier than nokia 9500, on par with e90, heck i think it is a little bit better than e90. and it is a symbian base device. an ok phone, for me 7/10.
It looks cool due to its simple lines, but seriously underpowered.
Sigh, just like the Panasonic X800, which couldn't do sht...
I have big fat fingers and am (mainly) an E90 user. What I see here might actually have some mileage for the likes of me as the front face seems to have huge keypad keys for SMS use at least, if not more.
I'll look forward to the review.
