Buying the 3650 dilemma...

15 replies · 4,995 views · Started 15 February 2003

Actually I have a few concerns here before seriously paying my half month salary for the phone :-? ...

1) After using the standard keypads in the normal phone (3X4 layout) does anyone find comfort using the new keypad layout ? Dialing and SMS ?
2) The size of the phone is comparable to a PDA (I have an IPAQ and guess I wont mind that) but what about the weight ?
3) I've read a posting about the phone unable to play stereo sound but for a start, does the phone have 2 speakers to play stereo ? Or are we expecting both stereo channels into one speaker ?
4) I also had surfed and found out that the phone does not support the bluetooth headset, BT is supported via data only. Can someone confirm this ?
5) The 3 series phone once is considered as a low end Nokia model (as compared to the 9 or 8 series) therefore are we going to expect price drop within the next few months ?

If 3650 is going to be like the "legendary" Siemens MP3 phone that came out (and remained the only MP3 phone since last few years) then I would certainly go get it (no questions asked) but as technology advances so quickly, I'm might afraid that Nokia would drop a bombshell and declare another nicer and feature-ful phone (with the 3X4 keypad 😉 ) within the next few months. Once I had owned a Nokia 8810 and now using Nokia 6210 but the price depreciation is so great that makes my investment on it seems not worthwhile. I'm hoping the 3650 would change that - at least for a few years of use.

I've read from multiple reviews that the keypad layout is just not intuitive to any efficient extent. Check out the button at the very bottom of the phone, it's almost impossible to hold the phone with one hand and dial that number without dropping the phone. And you'll just be learning a new keypad layout for perhaps the only phone that will ever use this type of strange circular layout.

And yes, the BT is ONLY data and NO headset. DOn't know what Nokia was thinking, especially since they are making their own BT headsets now.

This 3000 series phone is supposed to target the masses, but the price doesn't match its class. I'd rather highly recommend the other nokia phone that'll be coming out soon which includes BT (still no voice), triband GSM, and camera. The Nokia 7250 I think looks more professional (metallic finish), is MUCH smaller than the 3650, and the price is about the same when it comes out. Check that model out, and I'm sure you'll be hooked.

However, if you REALLY want to get the best phone out there, I recommend the P800. GOt it for a while, hell expensive, but hell functional.

Hope all this helps.

I would not buy it until its officailly released in your country. There are no official English language versions availible yet. The devices you see are grey import Chinese verions flashed with beta English firmware.

Most reports don't seem to like the round keypad but some people don't mind it.

Bluetooth headset will be supprted in the official version, its just a bug with the current beta English flashed versions.

The official version will be cheaper than the grey imports and most phones gets progressively cheaper over time. Normally the day after you buy it 😃

I have a Chinese flashed to English - for me, I love the phone.
You do actually get used to the round keypad - and at the moment with the dial design it certainly get the heads turning whenever it comes out of my pocket.
'WOW is that a phone!!' I often hear.. 😊
It's a big phone, but VERY light, I don't notice it in my pocket. (is that a 3650 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me)

If you have a 7650 and are happy with it then the only real reason to upgrade would be if you REALLY need the extra memory, plus the camera is much better. It has a more of a 'toy' feel to it being made of plastic whereas the 7650 has more of a 'tool' feel to it, the 7650 looks more of a serious phone and the 3650 a fun phone.
For me at least the camera being better made it a worthwhile upgrade.
I HAVE to carry the phone at all times for my job - now I also always have a camera too, for those days out with the family it's the idea companion! Plus with a WAP+HTML Browser / email etc I can keep in touch with the office too.
If only I could PCAnywhere into our webservers with it I could leave the laptop at home!!

If your considering buying an import I'd say wait for the official one - you'll save a couple of hundred quid and my flashed phone does crash often - wap surfing is only in 16 colours and you don't get the 'photo fun pack' nokia is advertising. One plus side is it came with a 16mb MMC card (which will hold about 300 photo's in high quality mode), not sure what the official phone will come with.

Expect some heavy price reductions with contracts as the networks will be giving them away in order to get you hooked as they will make their money from MMS and GPRS services.
I heard that Vodafone are already talking of offering it FREE with new contracts!!!!!!

Best

Will.

Responses to your points -

1) I would expect that most people will get used to the get keypad after a couple of days.

2) I don't know what a typical PDA weighs, but the 3650 is 130g, a little less than my 3310.

3) Some devices use stereo headphones. If the phone could play sound in stereo then you could use like a regular MP3 player (or for playing any sound really), if you got headphones for the phone. You can use it to play MP3 files (with the appropriate software) but all sounds are output in mono. Bit of a bummer.

4) Again, the 3650 does support audio BT.

5) I believe that the 7650 dropped in price a lot, but I don't know the details. I would expect the same from the 3650.

If you looking for a similar phone that has more features then you might want to wait for the Nokia N-Gage.

Another Series 60 phone this time without the camera, but with stereo sound, an FM radio, an MP3 player, a 64MB MMC in the box, and it plays some games too. Expected release date is 4th quarter 2003.

Thanks for the info guys, I guess I'll hold on to my wallet (and my nokia 6210) until the real english set arrives. Anyway how can we confirm whether it's an original english set or a flashed set ?

Keep checking here and you will know it should be quite soon 😃

I expect that Nokia will announce a firm date next week at the 3GSM conference. They are due to do a press release on Tuesday.

I certainly agree with khkai. Go get the P800. Its worth every penny man. I have been a loyal Nokia user for year now. In fact i had the 3650 for 2 weeks before i traded it with the P800. And one thing i can tell you is you never get adopted to the circular keypad. And for web browsing and mp3,the p800 is tops. The 3650 will never be in stereo even with so called stereo headset. As for prices, one thing i have noticed through the years is that the prices of Nokias fone tend to drop dramatically within a few months. Of course handset prices tend to drop over time as new models come out, but not as drastically as those of Nokias

pare how much did you get the p800? magkano dagdag mo? coz im using now 3650. 😃

I'm not too sure about those who have the P800 but from my experience of having a touch screen device (like IPAQ) and without protection in my pocket - I feel vulnerable. Having to knock such touch screen device onto anything really hurts !

Anyway the P800 was initially in my list of considerations but I only have issues on the following :-

1) Memory sticks price
2) Touch screen issue (As stated above)
3) Price (Well, since 3650 cost half of my monthly - the P800 would cost 3/4 of my monthly salary !)
4) Compatibility : I actually have an IPAQ and it's using MMC. I'd figured that I can slot the MMC in and out between the IPAQ and the 3650 and play bluetooth between it as well.

Perhaps it's all up to personal preference but thanks for the advise christomas, I guess some phones are made for high class people who are willing to spend - sadly I am just not one of them.

Also from what I've seen, the camera on the 3650 takes better images than the P800. Wheather that is software rather than hardware I can not say as I do not know the specs of the P800, but to the eye, 3650 is better.

May be important to you - may not...

Sad to say, I will have to agree with willbrady. The camera on the P800 sucks. The picture quality taken with my old 7650 is so much better. Its really stupid since Sony makes some of the finest digital camera. Hey Irving, i got my fone kinda expensive eh. 8K. That was almost a month ago. Pero my bro told me that you can get it sa Globe much cheaper daw. Authorized unit pa. I think his friend got it for 21k lang with a 1K monthly plan. Ok na din di ba. And Mousy its not really about some people having class or something. It really depends on your needs man. Seeing that you already have an Ipaq, maybe it would be better to hold on to it man and try to get a bluetooth fone. There are lots now available. You can pair it up with your PDA and get the same use as a P800. Maybe even better 😊

I agree with you on the IPAQ christomas. Anyway sorry if my previous reply offended you or anyone out there. I guess there's always the pros and cons about anything we purchase out there and price war is certainly one of the "cons" in which we can never avoid... :-?

I heard rumours that the 3650 would be launched in Malaysia by next month. The current "submarine" (imported) set is selling for RM2150 and the original set would be expected cheaper, so be ready to hit the shops for those who are staying here ! 😉

thanks bro 😃 p800 pic is sucks?

one: chinese 3650 does not support audio bluetooth ( it's on the web site children for crying out loud ). the english/ rest of the world will. I am trying to find out if this is software ( licencing/ space ) or hardware limited.
two:mono mono mono!
three: round keypad. after two days I stoped noticing it, but I dont text a lot.
four: 7250 is in a different league all together. you might as well compare a p800 and a gd 87.
five: here the 3650 was 1799 and the 7650 was 1099. The 7650 is in run out as it is a bigger stuff up than the 7110.
six: if you think nokia are not going to surplant this phone in 1 -2 months with the 6800 guess again. They are in different markets though. you might prefer the 7250 when it ships.
Anything else?

So, did Nokia make any announcement today?
