prodigal son buys a E51

Hi,

Back in the day I got a 7650, and one of the first thing I did was join AAS so as to learn how to truly use it. I forgot what my ID was, probably it has lapsed anyhow - though I see those forums are still there.

Anyhow, after a long while spent on IT, I got an e51 recently and though I would write some first impressions from a person who has been a while away from the mobile world.

* It has wlan - I cannot believe it! I thought operators guarded their walled gardens like rabid pitbulls! How can I possibly be allowed to connect to a wlan and browse without being billed (by them). I suppose they just had to relent at some stage.

* Is there a way to write some scripts for the phone so I can quickly access functionalties hidden deep in menus? (manufacturers always found this a great way to discourage usage of certain things).

* The google maps midlet works great. I did the same for the youtube one, but it was terrible. It made the phone hang totally. Had to do a hard reset. Not a good thing - its been deleted. IS all the reference to emtube because it is a better client? I should go for that one when.

* fring - wow that's cool. It seems to work.

* there's a sticky on product codes - how can these be used? Are they a way to liberate a locked down mobile? Or are they only useful for changing the langauge of a mobile?

More from the prodigal son, later. Cheers!

OK. nobody is replying much, though I'm sort of getting to the answers myself.

So I'll self-reply and say:

- Product codes? Has to do with unbranding. In comparison to old models such as the 7650, operators can now embed their mds deeper int he phone, so that the acticity of unbranding is now more difficult. Changing product codes is a way out of this.

- Scripts? Have a look at the python app & interpreter- some interaction with the system is possible.

Another discovery: the speaker is unbelievably good! Never heard anything that good from such a tiny speaker! Gasp!

WLAN - yep - great for doing VoIP too e.g. www.truphone.com

The E51 doesn't seem to get discussed as much here as other phones, but you'll probably find answer in the other forums (looks like you've been use the seearch already so you probably know this)

The phones are more locked down with platform security - probably inevitably as device sold in the millions per quarter. But yes Pythin is really the only scripting things. There is Ruby too, not looked at it myself.

Google Maps - you're probably using the native version (one of the reason it works better than youtube one). The E51 is also a bit underpowered in multimedia terms.

thanks for the reply Rafe .. you took pity on me 😊!

It's no problem ... getting replies to posts is only part of finding the answer.

I looked at the ruby ... I think it's a good bit behind the python. I remember the confusion back in the day when Nokia said they'd go for perl and then they turned around and went for python. That was 2003 I reckon, so python has got to be the most mature by a long distance.

I've tried fring and it worked. I didn't look at truphone... looks more elaborate. One wouldn;t use skyp with I imagine. I'll have to try it out.

e51 underpowered for multimedia .. well, it just that I've been away for such a while. The leap from the 7650 is just stunning - I'm easily impressed quite obviously.

Heh - yes I guess multimedia prowess is a matter of perspective.

Python is defintely more mature, there a good forum on Forum Nokia if you wish to learn more.

Truphone is VoIP only - i.e. no IM, no Skype etc... but it does integrate with the existing telephony stuff, you can choose to do a cellualr call or a internet call. Great way of saving money on international calls.

Oh and welcome back!

yeah, Fring as well as Truphone or SIPgate or whatever SIP program you look at, are 2 things I would heartliy recommend. 😉

thanks for the replies ... What is hard to work out is what the product codes are for and how they can be used. I guess it's something I've missed .. can anybody cast some light about it over in my direction?
