I was just wondering because I have heard about all the incidents about the keypad damaging the screen. I know for a fact that the pins on the keypad (if accidentally pressed really hard) do create a pressure point on the screen which will cause the screen to crack more easily. And do you know if putting on a screen protector would help? What is your advice on this issue?
Keeping the keypad on dangerous???
heard phone acts weird w/ some screen protectors ,acts uncalibrated.
I just put it in my pocket and always make sure there is no change or buttons or keys in that pocket. W/ the keypad on looks kind of prehistorical compared w/ it off. Beside if screen scratched w/time, always can get a newer version.
I dont think theres really any danger of cracking the screen from button presses. If you try to open the flip and press the button, you will observe that the buttons has a definite movement distance. Theres no way that you can overextend this movement since the button has some lock that makes further travel impossible. About the screen protector, i had been using Brando for three weeks now without any problem
hey thanks christomas, that sounds good to me, but then I have heard of people putting the P800 in thier pockets and then while they were going through thier day they might have put a heavy pressure on thier pockets and the next time that they have a look at thier phone, the screen was cracked. They were saying something about the pins on the buttons creating this pressure point on the screen, then causing the crack. Yeah but then thanks, well seems to me then that the keypad is not that big of a thing...but I am still open to other opinions so please keep on posting people!!! :P
Hi!
I used to have my key flap on but after reading this thread (the post by BFG http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93017&highlight=desk) i took it of.
It's true that the buttons on the flap only can push so much and they cannot push hard enough to cause damage, BUT, the plastic piece that holds the button is a bit flexible, so of enough pressure is applied to it, it bend inwards and then the buttons may crack the display.
I have modified my original case Two times, first http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7462&highlight= so i could have it in my belt, and second to protext my display better in the case:
I found this info
http://www.telefon-treff.de/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37773
and i did pretty much the same. I used a snow scraper from my car (just a flat piece of white plastic), cut it to fit, and then i opened the seam in the lid of the case, and slid the plastic inside the back of the case, all the way in, and then i sewed it shut again. So now i have a case that is really hard on one side to protect my phone better.
Not a chance i will use my key flip again.

Wow, so does that mean that putting on a screen protector does not help? This flaw I think should really be fixed by SE. Well I bought the brando cover and when the P800 i officially released here in Hong Kong I will immediatly buy it and then use the protector.
Yep, it's true this guy said he cracked he's screen this way, but he also said he put it on his back pocket and then sat on it!!! I mean, if you take the flip off, put the phone on your back pocket and then SIT on it, there is a chance you'll break something.
I tried both ways and I find leaving the flip on works better for me to sepparate better between phone and PDA functions. For example. The Keybord is locked for phone closed flip, but if you open the flip it unlocks automatically, use the PDA and then close the lid, it's locked again, safes me time. Also the open flip-speakerphone use is awsome, and much easier to just open a flip without even having to look at your screen, than looking finding the arrow, pressing e.t.c . Also touchtone works better w/flip on
Also, by costumizing the flip closed shortcuts i can access voice memos, jotter entries and tasks without bothering to open and use the stylus. It's also easear to dial fast with the flip closed.
I use a ViewSonic screen protector. It took me half an hour to cut it and costumize it for my screen, but it works very well. No loss whatsoever, no bubbles, you actually don't see it and it feels better than the screen. Also I often use my finger, even to write on the screen and it recognizes the letters the same as using a pen. W/ the screen protector I have no fear of scratching.
So I think flip, for me anyway
BTW: has anyone an experience with a Screen Protector that works?
Any HowTo or WhereToBuy?
Thanks
Michael
As I wrote just above you i'm using view sonic and it works perfectly.
You do have to do some cutting. Here's what I did. Pick a piece of white paper and lightly brush a pencil on top of it while on top of your phone (remember that trick we used to do as kids to copy coins? same here) 😃
Then cut it to the shape iof the scren and use it as your model. Using this cut the viewsonic or any other PDA screen protector to shape. set on screen. go o control panels and recalibrate your screen (this is what some people forget to do. Hence the problems) and enjoy.
Tip. before shaping the screenprotector remove the Key pad. You'll see thre's an extra 1/2 inch of screen under the plastic bottom. If you have the protector cover this, and then put the plastic bottom back you'll get a very clean and invisible screen protector. On my P8 you cannot tell at all I have one.
I use viewsonic because they're very good and designed to true color.
Let me know how it works out for oyu.
To Me:
If you read BFG:s post
After only a week of having my phone, I rolled up to my desk at work, and felt a sickening crunch from my p800 (in my pants pocket at the time). The face of the phone had been pushed in to the edge of the desk (and not with alot of force either).),
you'll see that he did not SIT on his phone at all, but he probably had it in his front pocket and it got squashed between him and his desk.
Of course if you sit on your phone it will break with or without flap bit this was not the case here.
About screen protectors; I have not used one, but i believe they are supposed to protect against scratches only, and not pressure and cracked display. And SonyEricsson have designed the little pegs on the keypad to press just about as much to the display as needed, and if one puts a plastic film between the pegs and the display, will there not be more pressure on the screen and higher risque for cracking the display?

Sorry, but I seem to remember another posting of a guy that cracked it on his back pocjet. In any event this case that oyu're describing doesn't seem to be due to the keypad either which is the purposse of this query.
Yes, logic supports that a screen protector will, even if very very little, increase the pressure on the screen. But that's I'm assuming accidentlal pressure, because when we dial we can adjust the pressure we use. My bet is that any pressure capable of breaking the screen will do so with or without screenprotector. At the same time, keeping the Keypad would eliminate the chances of desk corners pressing against the screen by accident.
The screen protector I'm using is less than paper thin. and I find it uncomfortable to keep the phone in my pant pocket, I normally use a belt clip pouch or my jacket. Or sometimes loop it around my neck. While accidents do happen, I feel safer keeping the Keypad on, at least for now
As i said before i use the Crando screen protector. Its easy to install and it has a model exclusively for the P800. So no cutting here. Its also washable. I know a couple of friends whos using it without any problem too. About the cracking screen, well i never really put my fone in my pockets, wether in front or back pocket. I feel its somewhat dangerous. Sooner or later, you will inadvertantly forget that you have a fone in there and sit in it, bang it, or place some objects in it that could damage the fone. Any fone. What i did was to use the old leather case of my 7650. Fits like a glove since both fones are almost of the same size
Well the mini stylus on the keypads won't damage the screens. But at the bottom of the keypad, there's an area that will press onto your screen if you hit it from the outside. My screen just cracked, one week into using it. So, be careful, even a small knock on the keypad will very likely cause it to crack the diaplay.
@christomas: You really "forget" that you have your P800 in your pocket? 😃 Do you have the P800 "micro-edition"?
