The N96 updates keep coming...

20 replies · 8,702 views · Started 06 November 2008

Generic unlocked Nokia N96 owners (RM-247) can now update their firmware to v11.018 (from v10) at last. Thought you might want to know. And word on the street is that there's a v12.035 update out for some product codes.... let's hope these fixes will all be painless and data-loss-free!

Read on in the full article.

All data was preserved here, including apps. Although just before the update, the N96 was refusing to play any music, locked in a 'Searching for music' loop. And it's still doing it.... Hey ho, onto v12 in a few days' time?

My gut feeling is that the N96 shows lots of potential but is still too buggy for day to day use. At least for me. The N95 took a year to get right, the N95 8GB six months. Maybe 3 months will see the N96 sparkling?

Hear, hear. Worth sticking with though. Incidentally I've got the v11.101 by changing the product code, as I think I said somewhere else in the forums. But it's still terribly, terribly slow at routine tasks - I wondered if it was the MicroSD read that was doing it so tried with it out, but just the same. I can wait if it matures like the N95 did. Let's hope you're right.

Tim

v11 is still not out for my UK sim free version with code 0573063, i was all excited b/c i thought it would be lol
any way i'll just get back in line and hope to get it soon it can.t be long now

Following a rumour I read earlier on the web, I tried, using both FOTA, and NSU, and V11 is the latest for the trial N96 I have at the moment.

Cheers for the heads up though Steve.

EDIT - Checked your article, it is indeed the same rumour. I followed the source Steve, and it leads to a site(known for cracked/warez) with an .exe file hosted on rapidshare.

In theory...what will happen if he connection interrupted & firmware update "FOTA" discontinued?..i have an unstable WLAN connection...the device will be managed by Nokia Service Centre like the NSU updating problems or everything remain normal "without updating off coarse".

i dont know for certain but i assume it downloads the update before installing it,so if downloading is interrupted by bad connection it just wont update until you reconnect and get the full update so i think ppl need not worry about bricking phones with FOTA updates
i'm sure some one will confirm my theory one way or another

Hey Steve,

On topic, but different phone. Have you heard any rumors about an upgrade coming for the N85? Great phone but it needs an upgrade badly. Nothing major, just some basic things.

i just got a text message from nokia the update is available from today for the Uk sim Free version i posted about yesterday

EDIT: nokia lied to me i just did a check theres no update ,why did they send me a text saying new update available with link lol

Did it just say there was newer firmware available? If so, it may of been a belated message regarding V11.101.

Why don't you change your product code via NSS to 0558083 (the benefit for the said firmware is you get an volume boost in media player as discussed in n81 street (search for About loudness at the n81street)
You'll get to injoy the nice eye candy with fp1

I have already tried this, and V20 still was not showing in NSU, even though it was showing in the Nokia online checker.:icon13:

how about we get a sticky thread like we did in the n95 forum where you show the changelog for each fw update..

im lock to voda by the way, who, i hope, are at the very least, better than orange at releasing new firmware.

I have tried to update through the nokia software updater and the update failed and bricked my phone, i got a brand new handset tried again and it failed when the phone crashed so i thought it wasn't worth bricking again so i have left it. my phone is a unlocked n96 and just seems to reset and fail the update every time and the update is not on the FOTA yet so looks like i'll have to put up with the buggy software which is a shame as it is a pain in the ass with the problems it has

i already have v20 on mine after i changed the product code and down loaded v20 with nss and my phone is awsome now and the best thing i ever did it works so much better in every sense

i have changed my product code using nss and lownloaded v20 from a eropean site and now my phone works so well not slow at all and can do live tv and a heap of other applications for it too best thing i ever did so forget about v11. just get nss and then get v20. im sorry i cant remember exactly where i got it from i just googled updates for it and then downloaded it my phone is so good now it even rivals the i phone easily coz there is nothing it cant do
