My issue is when disconnecting from a 3G connection used when syncing to either a POP account or a Mail for Exchange account on a timer (ie phone in standby and it connects every 15 mins to check for email) the phone crashes partially.

The backlight no longer works, if I'm playing music however it continues, no functions work and the 3G with the dotted line underneath is displayed. I cannot do anything except remove the battery. Holding red should disconnect it tho doesn't... seems to be a timeout error as if I catch it early enough I can hit red and it disconnects.

Anyone have this issue?

I've flashed the phone, reinstalled and formatted the internal memory many times. It was fine with previous (v20) fw.

Any new suggestions or camaraderie welcomed !

I have heard V30 is much worse than V20, i always sit back and dont flash until i have heard the good and bad points, thats why you shouldn't just jump in and flash as soon as an update comes out, better sitting back and waiting unless it really improves functionality better not bothering until bugs are ironed out. Unfortunately for you their is no way back to the older firmwares via nss, and your stuck. All i can say to you is format the phone *#7370# and make sure you don't do any software restores / eg settings / messages etc as they can cause major problems when using new firmware.
