Access Point Swapping E66 and E71

Hi all,

Just made a great discovery that I would like to share. I am an E66 user and like the phone a lot. Only disappointment is that the access point swapping feature of the E65 was not brought across to this phone.

I was looking through the download app's on the phone today and stumbled across an application called Birdstep. I used this app a couple of years ago on my N80. It allows you to set up a single access point that contains a list of access points, wireless, GPRS, etc. in priority order. Also let's you disconnect and reconnect if a better one comes along. You simply tell your phone to use the Birdstep access point and Birdstep does the rest.

Interesting thing is they stopped selling this app some time ago and said they were going to work with partners instead.

So looks like one of the partners is Nokia. From what I can see it is free. Is working fine with MFE at the moment and also works on the E71 as my colleague has one and has now installed it as well. Have been using it for about half a day and seems to work pretty well.

Hope this helps a few of you out. My E66 is now perfect (except for the need for a firmware update). It is crazy that Nokia do not ship the phone with this installed.

There are several alternatives for this - both free (Wefi/ Devicescape) and paid - Psiloc Connect - which clearly is the best IMHO

Interesting, Psiloc would not work from me and when I contacted them they acknowledged a bug. Trial lapsed and I didn't want to pay for it.

As far as I can tell Devicescape and Wefi are designed for wifi hotspots and don't support packet connections. I wanted something to use packet when I am roaming and wifi when I am at home or in the office.

Glad to hear you got Psiloc working. Have you tried Birdstep?

This software would be interesting to me for my E71, but I can't find it - any ideas where I should be looking?

Jon

You're right that Wefi and Devicescape does not support packet connections. However Psiloc Connect works flawlessly on my E71-1

I have not tried Birdstep, but would hav if I had been aware of if "before" Psiloc Connect 😉

It isn't in my downloads/office area - Orange wouldn't have removed it to avoid losing data charges, would it? Can't believe I could be so cynical...

Is there anywhere else I can get it from, or download it from?

J
