I've had my new E71 now for 3 days. Prior use was 2 years with a Palm Treo 650. Have an 8G microSD chip in E71.
FIRST: When I use PC Suite to transfer ebooks to the phone, I tell it to place the material on the memory chip, not the phone. However, when I use File Manager, it shows me nothing! When I run either the eReader app or the Adobe PDF app, both show nothing in their respective "bookshelves." Where does Nokia hide this stuff???
SECOND: WLAN problem (at home). Starbucks and airports, any open connection, the E71 finds, ID's and connects with no problem. At home, it's another story. I have a 2WIRE Wireless DSL modem. I finally accessed the modem and it says my access point is: 00:18:3f:ad:8b:01. In 64-bit mode, (hex) it won't let me put the full set of numbers in. Yet, in 128-bit mode, it says I don't have enough digits. How do you "get there" from here?
Any assistance on these two matters would be greatly appreciated as they're the only things holding me back from full enjoyment of my new E71.
Thanks,
John
The E71 PDF viewer is the same version of PDF viewer in other S60 phones?...then it should has a file manager in the application itself...or i guess its on E(Memory Card):\Documents.
The same for Ebooks.
I love to read. I use eReader books alot and so carried my enjoyment of them from my Treo 650 to my e71. eReader Pro software can go into either Phone or Ex. Memory. It's "where to put the .pbd files" that get you. eReader offered several locations, all of which were wrong.
Here's the eReader solution:
1. Install the application reader to either phone or ex. memory location (your choice).
2. IF you install to the phone, you MUST install the .pbd ebook files in: Phone Memory-->Other. DO NOT use any lower sub-folder!
3. IF you install to the chip, you MUST install the .pbd ebook files in: Ex. Memory --> data --> others. Again, DO NOT use any lower sub-folder.
Additional: PDF files on the memory chip should simply be loaded into "Books" folder. Clicking on the PDF file will activate the PDF Reader.
Hopefully, this will help those who have, or will, run into this fiasco.

Ok,
Got my ebook problem resolved. Now, need to understand the WiFi-Home problem. I have no problems connecting to public WiFi when I'm out and about. It's the home wireless modem that is stopping me.
It's a 2WIRE wireless modem, model 2700HG. I set it for Public, Open and Ad Hoc in the phone. Then, when asked for the WEP Key, I enter a 10-digit number that is on the modem tag. I keep getting "No gateway reply." So, my question now is about the WEP Key. I keep reading where people enter "4 codes" whereas I only have the one 10-digit code.
This seems to be where I'm cornered. If you use your e71 with your home wireless modem, could you list your e71 settings for me and tell me a bit more about WEP utilization? I'd sure appreciate it. This is the last problem with the device I'm encountering.
Thanks,
John
...r u sure u have the right key? Never seen one actually written on a modem before,...u usually set it via your PC/MAC browser or utility software with the unit itself?
Be sure you have the key mode set to HEX, not ASCII when entering the key!
In roaming the other e71 forums, I've come to the conclusion that there's a "bug" in the software from Nokia. There are just too many people voicing the exact same problem! This is evidently something Nokia is going to have to issue a "fix" for. One of their main selling points and it doesn't work.
On my modem/router, the WEP Key is listed on the serial number tag. It's a 10-digit number. The phone will accept it but the modem won't respond to it. It shouldn't be this hard or mind-warping, NOKIA!
I understand that you can either use the unit's WEP Key or establish one of your own. I know nothing about this. If one were to establish their own "passkey" word, would it interfere with my already established home network? One of which is my wireless laptop? Would it have to be reconfig'd again? I'm in a whole new world here but I'm not beyond learning.
John
As I said, I'm running a 2WIRE 2700HG Wireless Modem/Router. On the serial number tag, it shows a WEP of "6336245147."
When I go into XP to set up another wireless connection, it gives me the following info:
Network Name (SSID): GARRYOWEN
Network Key (WEP/WPA Key): 04cde21ff2764316835d5efdd7
Key Provided Automatically (802.1x): 0
Network Authentication Type: open
Data Encryption Type: WEP
Connection Type: ESS
Key Index:
I've been aware to use HEX instead of ASCII and have tried both 64- and 128 bit. Tried both "infrastructure and Ad Hoc."
Still getting "No Gateway Reply."
Is the above enough for someone to decypher for me? I'd sure appreciate it.
John
Bingo! Found the home WLAN/Modem "gateway" problem solution!
And it wasn't technical, unless you call being technical using a pencil.
As I said, 2WIRE has their WEP key on the serial number tag under the unit. The numerals are so small and had a bit of "ink-leach" that it was hard to distinguish between a "6" and an "8." I used a hi powered flashlight to look again. Saw the mistake and changed the WEP info that was inputted to the e71.
I've now got contact with my home modem/router! That was the last of my e71 hurdles. And it was a stupid one, at that. However, I have a lot of stupid friends out there that might just find the same problem. Look at it more closely.
All is well now and working as stated.
The above is the "Fix" that worked for me. I now have internet thru my e71 via my home modem/router.
I've told you above what the "glitch" was and how it was corrected. Now, let's look at the internal phone settings I'm using:
Connection Name: Infinitium3285 (set by modem)
Data Bearer: Wireless LAN
WLAN Ntework name: Infinitium3285
Network Status: Public
WLAN network mode: Infrastructure (mine works on both)
WLAN Security Mode: WEP
WLAN Security Settings: "input the WEP Key that's on your modem's serial number tag"
Homepage: whatever
These are the setting and actions I've taken to connect my Nokia e71 to my home secure router successfully. Hope it helps.
Can anyone comment on dust getting under their screen on the E71? Been checking reviews online and noted people are complaining about dust easily getting under the screen. Anyone experience that?
I plan on getting an E71 in a week or two and already ordered an Invisibleshield for it. Would be a pain to have to keep removing the shield to do this.......
