Dissecting the Storm

Totally non-Symbian but still a valid link-of-interest for many, Engadget have been evaluating the Blackberry Storm, very much a Nokia Eseries competitor, and have come up with a refreshingly honest critique of the sprung-screened Storm - I've played with one and agree that this is one technology the Symbian world should steer clear of. Comments welcome if you've tried one too...

I'd almost forgot how bad the Apple fanboyism was on Engadget, yeesh

No, the BGR review also talks about how much of a downgrade the touch-screen typing is on the Storm. It's not just Engadget. And, come on, having one big button underneath the screen, with a stonking great gap all round the edge? it's just a horrible kludge. IMHO

Well -- I guess it's no Storm for me then 😉
At first it sounded interesting, then I realized that e-mail (gmail) would not work as well as on my current phone and other apps perhaps harder to get by but the click-touch still sounded interesting.... After reading these reviews, it sounds like a no-go however.

Perhaps I should try out the SE X1 some time, despite it's WinMo OS? Or the E71 despite it's lack of a touch-screen?

Does anyone know if Nokia are planning a device with both a QWERTY and a Touch-Screen? That would be the most ideal combination for me perhaps, to replace my P990i. (which is still a great device, despite it's age, and it's only real flaw is lack of RAM!)

Cheers,

Nokia have Haptikos coming up in a touch phone early - mid next year. Apparently it's very good indeed, see here: http://www.redferret.net/?p=9533

Sounds like it will blow other force feedback (haptics) systems away. Now if ONLY they would put multitouch on it (and lets not hear any Apple patent nonsense - there is LOADS of prior art for multitouch).

Got to say, that did seem rather iphone this and that on engadget.

I have heard from people who have the storm that the clickable feedback is exactly what they have been missing from touchscreens. Maybe a marmite case here?

I'm an E90 stalwart through and through so I'm fine with the Blackberry bashing, the web browser and UI are a bit of a no go for me anyway, but that engadet review went down the toilet within the first paragraph, it's akin to you guys kicking off Innova or X1 coverage by extolling the virtues of Nokia and the N95, it's terrible journalism and really quite tedious for people who are more interested in the item supposedly being reviewed.

well i had a Storm.... Sold it. Moved to a X1 which i sold yesterday and have now ordered a G1 as i work for T-Mobile its with no rental on my staff plan.

if your looking between the X1 or Storm get the X1 and add on TouchFlo 3D free from XDA Developers it looks great, Storm felt rushed and not finished from the very slow UI to the big gap around the screen which will let in dust and dirt.

Although il have a G1 from Tuesday im waiting for the 5800 which as Rafe will tell you i love as a phone!,
