I was just looking at my paper driving licence and noticed one of those square blocky bar codes on it. I pointed my N95 at it and it came up with a mixture of numbers and characters, but most of it corresponded to my driver number.
The only other places I've seen these codes in real life are on packages I've had delivered (which revealed the tracking number for the parcel) and on my bus stop (which gave me the same number that was printed next to it - a part number, perhaps?).
Anyway, I know you can generate your own bar codes online to either show messages or give personal information (suitable for a business card) but, I'm curious... have any of you REALLY seen any real life applications for the bar code reader in your everyday lives?
In a word, no.
I've always thought that this is THE most useless programme I have ever come across.
Cheers,
Barrie
2D barcodes are popping up more and more as part of "modern culture" as seen in many places in the far east. In fact, you will find that in Japan, there is not too many places that do not have these barcodes that links back to the business as a "bookmark" of sorts.
You can go to restaurants and bars and snap these barcodes to your phone and will automatically add a bookmark to your phone browser for you to access their menus and other promotional stuff.
Even a lot of japanese websites are starting to have these up and running. I guess its also for the convenience that they can surf your site whilst they commute..
I actually have noticed these are starting to pop up even in Sydney these days especially in the tourist areas (we have plane-loads of japanese tourists)..
Well that sounds cool but I'm afraid that I'll have to wait another millenium for that sort of thing to turn up here.... (Canary Islands) so, for me it is still the most useless thing I have ever seen :con?

This is the only generator i've seen online. But for other things that have been suggested...
