Skyfire browser beta is now open to the UK

In case anyone is interested.

The Skyfire proxy based browser has some of the benefits of Opera Mini (speed, low bandwidth etc) but allows use of streaming audio and video.

I installed it yesterday and it works on my firmware 20 N95 but it still needs work in my opinion.

It isn't always easy to select buttons and links as the pointer doesn't snap to each object as well as Opera Mini 4.1

Worth a look though.

I suppose it's my own fault but, I downloaded the Skyfire Browser to my N95 8gb before it was available in the UK by using a made up US telephone number. Now that it is available in the UK, the beta version has been updated. So, I decided to update my version. Having downloaded the sis file to my PC, I was told to uninstall the previous version of Skyfire before installing the new one as apparently the two verions have a conflict. So, I uninstalled the old one and got a warning that uninstalling the old version of Skyfire might make other programmes not work.

Hold your horses I thought and did a full phone backup to my PC. Then I uninstalled Skyfire. Then I tried to install the new verison and got a message "Symbian OS PIPS is not installed continue to install anyway?" (I am pretty sure that before the uninstall of Skyfire there was a lisitng for Symbian OS PIPS in my App manager). Anyway, I installed it and Skyfire did not work although my previous Beta version did. So I recovered my phone from the backup thinking that all would be well. But now when I try to connect to my WLAN I get the message "WLAN: WLAN CONNECTION ALREADY ACTIVE. CLOSE IT AND TRY AGAIN."

I have tied re-installing the software to my phone using the NSU and everything is OK and I can connect to my WLAN if I re-enter the WEP key. But, as soon as I restore the backup I get the same problem with the WLAN. As I say, it's my own fault for trying to cheat the system, but please readers be aware that when Skyfire comes out of Beta and you want to upgrade there may be trouble ahead!

If anyone has an answer to my problem with the WLAN I would love to hear from you.

If anyone is interested there is a new beta build available.

It seems marginally more stable but sucks battery like crazy when displaying flash video.
