N96 vs N82: Camera fight

I do enough phone camera comparisons of my own here without really needing to link to other people's, but Clinton Jeff's incredibly detailed head to head here between the Nokia N96 and N82 is worthy of mention. It seems that the newer device is hamstrung in firmware when it comes to focussing on close-up objects and that exposed camera glass seemingly doesn't help when shooting into light.

No contest really, isn't it? Although I am sure firmware will improve the N96's poor results, just the presence of the dual LED flash rather than Xenon reaffirms Nokia's apparent strategy of not allowing one device to become king of all and undermine sales of another. I have just moved from a 6220 Classic to the N82, despite loving the former's size and weight, simply because video recording on the 6220 isn't up to par due to poor exposure compensation and half-res video recording (not the 640 X 480 promised - this is the sort of thing Americans launch class action lawsuits over 😊 ).

It also shows I think that there must be multiple different handset teams, or at least that each handset is the process of much tweaking and is in a race against time with the release dates set by Nokia's managers and sales people. Very clearly getting the camera right on one handset does not mean it will be automatically right on any other handset...
