Is it at all possible just to install the charging element of the Samsung PC Studio software onto a pc?
I don't want to use all of PC Studio just the facility to charge the phone. I can't seem to get the device recognised on some PCs so it doesn't charge properly...

I haven't tried it myself but, I did notice a "USB driver only" option on the original CD?
Not sure if that will do it or not.
You can have your device connect in mass-storage mode instead of PC Studio mode. It will be rocgnised as a reguale mass-storage device. It's under the connection-settings.
