The N95 classic hits v31 - a final hurrah?

Yes, the Nokia N95 Classic has had a firmware update, to v31 (from v30), two years after the phone was first available. Impressive. Screen proof and any observations below. More later (if I can spot any changes!)

Read on in the full article.

I got cocky with v30 and backed up calendar and contacts to OviSync. Bad idea because they all came back corrupted. Luckily I had a six-month-old PCSuite backup too.

😮 In Australia,Just checked nokia firmware updater, still has v30 as newest firmware. Simply asks if i want to re-install. Guess hasnt filtered through all of nokia yet. Will keep looking 🙄

Keep in mind ppl, that those Classic N95ers that retain an open OS, might wish to hold back on updating. That is until, it is actually confirmed that proceeding w/ updating won't relinquish those liberties/access over "the owners'" phone. Just food for thought.😉

I'll give this a bash tonight.

Maybe it will sort out my SMS problem... which is a long story in itself.

@genXhippie, thanks for the warning, I'm sure this would save many people from updating their phones to v31 and crying later. Why can't Nokia come out with a solution to the problems that require system access before implementing an update like this?

Problems like themes that won't get deleted as it doesn't have an entry in the app manager or the corrupt sis installers that start installing whenever the phone is rebooted and end up with an unable to install error, increasing the startup time to almost 50 seconds. I, for one, haven't updated my N82 to v30 till now as I don't want to keep formatting to solve problems like these.

On the other hand, those of us that want a secure phone, and don't like the idea of a hoard of other people out there with open phones that are full of malware, may well urge everybody to update asap. I really do not like this automatic assumption that everybody approves of hacking and cracking.

Although to be fair, hacking my phone doesn't make your unhacked phone any less secure.

I was totally against hacking, but it does have it's advantages, for example, in the web browser it allows you to get rid of those multiple stupid bookmark folders with the same link in each one, why Nokia still insist on adding them I really don't know, I hacked my N82 and E71 just to get rid of them.

had to change my product code from an asian one to a euro one.

neilhoskins: can you name one piece of malware for s60 V3? I thought not. why should you care if there's a hoard of other people with open phones? Are you their mothers? And if you don't like the idea of open phones you had better start taking all those G1s out of people's hands. Who even mentioned support for cracking anyway so why bring that into the discussion?

Neilhoskins, congratulations on writing the most stupid comment I've ever read. I visit Gizmodo frequently... that should put into perspective how stupid your comment was.

Why do so many people seem to have a problem with measuring time? N95-1 came out early April 2007. It is *not* a 2 year old phone, it is only just past 18 months.

Hey !! Whats about the N95-4 ????

My N95 8GB NAM is stuck in V 20.2.005 and still no ASR (Auto Screen Rotation) or any solution for the suttering video problem reported on several places !!!! (among other minor bugs)

I know I have been waiting forever for new firmware for my N95 8GB NAM!!?

I have upgraded my N95 (original) phone and all 52 applications still work with little or no trouble. I am quite surprised how smoothly it went!

I can't say I can tell what has changed. The phone is noticeably quicker, although I put that purely down to the firmware upgrade. Once I restored all my texts, and photos, and calendar entry and it was back to it's usual self.

Upon starting the phone after the upgrade I did have to wait a long time (+- 5 minutes) for something to install from my memory card, but other than that, it was an uneventful upgrade.

I hope Nokia share the change log with us. I wonder when Nokia will push the firmware upgrade over the air?

Guys if you have v30 already, dont bother updating to this firmware. The only differences I noticed is a few cosmetic changes- so small Im not bothered to type them out.
Its not worth going through the bother of backing up data just for minor changes.

Updated and SMS issue resolved. First impressions.... maybe just that tiny bit snappier.

Now have an Ovi sync issue. Joy. Going to be now, I'll tinker tomorrow.

Why does mine not upgrade any further than 20.0.0.15 and says that it's up to date
I'm on three. i've downloaded the latest pc suite and the latest updater software too

stuarthurst:

You most likely have a 3-branded phone, meaning it will only update to the latest 3 "approved" firmware, which is v20. You have 2 options.

(1) Wait for 3 to sort out their own branded v30/v31 firmware. This is likely to take some time as the N95 is no longer their flagship device...

or

(2) De-brand your phone. This means your phone goes "native" - no more annoying 3 bookmarks, no more annoying 3 apps for 3-TV, 3-Games, etc. *HOWEVER* - this voids your warranty. If something goes wrong with your phone - you are *not* covered. There are plenty of threads on the web forums here and elsewhere that will tell you how to do it.

If you are reasonably computer savvy and willing to take the risk - go with (2). If not and you can do without widgets, automatic screen rotation and whatever else v30/v31 provides, stick with (1).

v20 is a nice N95 firmware - v30 only improves on minor aspects IMHO.

note: it IS two years - I got my first n95 production unit around Christmas 2006. Well, maybe it was a late proto... 8-)

@Hardeep1singh (off topic):
I found that themes that are not in the app manager list are usually on the memory card. If you have space, install them to the phone memory. Also, you can manually delete themes from your memory card (google for it).
The installing issue on boot or memory card exchange was solved for me by searching the memory card for .SIS files with strange names (starting with 'a' I believe), and (backing up&😉 removing these. In mass storage mode of course.

Stop fighting you too, the N95-1 was officially launched on Sept 27th 2006 but not actually available until April 2nd 2007

Another example of Nokia launching phones months and months and months before they are available.

could you tell some details about the N95 V31 firmware..i am looking forward to it

from China mainland

Yeah, that's still aggravating me, since v20x has a bug that kills the browser's password-saving feature. It's unbranded and unlocked -- should be easy to create an update, right? *sigh*

The v31 firmware has been pulled from the Nokia site. I believe it is due to a language bug that some people are reporting.

Hi ,
I was using the version V30 of the Nokia N95.Recently i upgraded it to the V31.0.017 firmware version.
Now there is a lot of problems in my phone.
The phone gets hangs quite often
When trying to open the contacts sometimes it displays blank
The deive is much slower to respond to clicks
When trying to co to Settings-> display the phone hangs at times

I suggest all the nokia n95 users not to upgarde to V31 as it has lot of problems. Kindly continue to use V30 itself .I am now stuck with V31 as we cannot downgrade to the older version .
When i contacted the customer care they too do not respond well and just say to go to Nokia care centre which would charge rs7500 just for looking into the problem .They too dont have a solution to this.
I Just hope that nokia release a new update with bug fixes to v31 firmware and release it soon enough
