Boom Blox found wanting on AAN

Here on All About N-Gage, Ewan's been putting the latest N-Gage game through its paces. Boom Blox starts as a great idea but quickly disappoints with limited levels, a level editor but no way to share your creations, and generally average gameplay. You can read the full review of Boom Blox here.

I haven't played the n-gage version, but it looks and sounds identical to the Java version (but with a 3D-feel, where the Java version was completely 2D).

I also found the gameplay to be lacking in replay value and when the moving creatures come along, it became annoying and unenjoyable for me rather than challenging.

is it me, or are most of the games from nokia short of something? Seems like most of the games still need more work to be done to get a score of at least 85 to 90%

I had a N95 8GB, and then changed to the Samsung INNOV8 - i thought the lack of ngage would be a sacrifice, but seems like the only sacrifice is fifa 08, which is pre-installed on the samsung anyway!

I think complicated games for mobile handsets is defo not a good match - the hardware is not built for games - simple, yet effect games, like skyforce, krally, etc are perfect. nokia could learn a few things.

the game is short and i did find it enjoyable - some levels were challenging, espically the later levels - but i did find it fun 😃

i think the reason why the games are short as they are meant for small playing times, i.e. breaks, buses. trains etc...

you dont want to strain your eyes looking at a small screen now do ya?

Nokia didn't do Boom Blox, it was a third party game from EA. If you look at Nokia's own first party games they're mostly pretty excellent and suit the hardware perfectly.

KRally and Sky Force are EXACTLY the kind of thing Nokia does do on N-Gage with its first party games: Creatures Of The Deep (which is the best-selling game on N-Gage) was developed by Infinite Dreams who did those two games you mentioned, and another Nokia first party game called Space Impact Kappa Base is pretty much the same sort of gameplay as Sky Force.
