Mobility Electronics' subsidiary Cutting Edge Software has now launched a Series 60 version of the Quickpoint Powerpoint viewer from its popular Quickoffice Palm OS suite.

As the first to bring Powerpoint viewing capabilities to Series 60, Mobility Electronics' Cutting Edge Software subsidiary has now ported the Quickpoint Powerpoint viewer, known from its popular Palm OS Quickoffice suite, to the platform. The new application enables direct synchronization with Microsoft PowerPoint, and lets users review PowerPoint presentations directly on their device.

Ill: Cutting Edge Software

The initial release of Quickpoint for Series 60 smartphones offers presentation viewing capabilities that include slide views at up to three zoom levels, speaking notes, slide thumbnails, and outline mode. In the next version of Quickpoint, due to be released in the near-term, Cutting Edge Software said it will include two distinct ways to present PowerPoint slide content.

First, Quickpoint will function as a handheld prompter by remotely controlling a PC-based PowerPoint presentation. Using a PC with Bluetooth, the presenter will be able to view the presentation on the handset in any of Quickpoint's four view modes, including the speaking notes view, while wirelessly advancing through a presentation. Secondly, Quickpoint will be able to be used in conjunction with an upcoming Bluetooth version of iGo's presentation adapter accessory, Pitch Duo, to allow Series 60-based handset users to present directly from the PowerPoint compatible file on the handset to SVGA or XGA projectors.

When used in conjunction with the next-generation Pitch Duo display adapter, the presenter has the same four view modes available for presenting material without the need for a PC. Pitch Duo will attach to projectors or monitors by a standard VGA connector and will also support Bluetooth wireless connectivity to smartphones. Series 60 handset users will be able to review and give presentations and advance through their slides wirelessly at a distance of up to 10 meters. Leveraging the integrated camera on Series 60-based Nokia imaging handsets, such as the Nokia 3650 and 7650, users of the next-generation Pitch Duo presentation adapter can also display photos on a projector or monitor.

Quickpoint for Series 60 is available now from the Quickoffice web site for $19.95 USD. The complementary iGo Pitch Duo display adapter with Bluetooth support is scheduled for release in March.

I had a quick play with this app since I use ppts a lot. An extra menu is added to Powerpoint, where you convert the .ppt file to a Palm format, just like their software for Palm. Then you synch it over to the 7650.

Size: the app occupies only 67k uncompressed on the phone, and a 2.43mb ppt presentation of 51 slides occupies 463k (5:1 compression).

Its ok for big graphics, but if you have text below font size 30, you cannot see a lot at all (for me the zoom option is not effective, and with a big presentation resizing takes a while). Maybe if Cutting Edge could turn the image 90 and make it full screen, the resolution would be at a useful level.

I still haven't worked out why I would need this app 😃 since it will only open files you (or somebody else with the plug-in) have converted yourself... but everybody is different and it may be the perfect answer for somebody
