optimizing RAM

Im planning to reformat my phone and MMC reader so I can optimize RAM memory... I intend to install individual files only not the AllNokia9210data...

Please advise me on what files to install, thanks...
the reason im doing this is coz i suspect some of the files included with the allnokia9210data is eating up RAM like CBS for example (im not even using this app) so I need the advice of experts...

thanks 😃

Very few apps cannot be closed down by the user, and those that can't can be killed by using the ctrl-shift-chr-k cryptic key combination. That's how I keep my RAM free and normally don't have too many problems.

I don't go below the 3mb Ram limit and I have background image, sidebar, smart memory and appman running.

I even did without the 2 installation sis files form Nokia ... installed all from seperate sis files and those few apps that can't be downloaded I got from my backup ...

i formated my phone before and install some the data one by one.

and for me after reboot 4.3 mb or i think 53% with smart memory

and after i played games and things the normal one is 3,9x Mb

is this normal or ....

can i get up to 5 Mb ????

holy cow, my initial RAM memory after restart's only 2.5 MB then it goes down after that, no wonder I need to reformat it... I don't get it, my phone is 9210i ver 5.34, how come you guys have more efficient phones?

tips please... I'm planning to install only the files that I need. Can anyone point out which applications from the pre-installed in the device are eating RAM even if it's not running? and how come RAM goes down after a restart?

:-?

also, I have the original installation cd from nokia and have all the sis files there, I think the softwares are for 9210i v5.34, if you want I can attach the files here...

please tell me what files are eating up RAM even if its not running...
by the way, if I set up an alarm is it using RAM? how about calendar data like somebody's b-day and I set up an alarm for that, will it eat up RAM? also for tasks?

Hope to hear from u guys...
😃

I can't say why Ram fills up after a while but since this stops at the same ram level time after time I can only conclude that it loads some used DLL's and doesn't unload them because they could be usefull later on?

I would suggest to install the 1 big Nokia sis file nokia_all_data.sis ?
(not the one for the mmc)
than install all the apps for the mmc seperately ...

I have the oldest firmware available, it has nothing to do with it 😛
at least not much 😉

It all depends what you have loaded.

For instance running things like activedesk, smartsecure ... won't help your Ram level 😛

Also try to limit running applications like desk, tel, extra, office ...
I only let Desk and Tel run continuely. The others I kill the moment I don't need them anymore (shift-ctrl-chr-k)

using an app like appman, switcher or taskmanager will help you manage your memory 2 😊

i have 4,2 free now. as my personal sugestion, you can leave out: CBS, HELP, faxmodem, WAP... but, again, you should know better..

that's what i did, i installed the allnokiadata.sis to the phone and the rest to the MMC (still got low RAM memory though). but this time im going to install them one by one not the allnokiadata.sis.

I think what Dazler said makes sense so I guess I'd better choose what apps to install then, thanks a lot and ill keep you posted...

don't forget to write down ur access point for wap

just in case

i don`t think that installing all_nokia_data is a good ideea, because you can`t uninstall certain components after that. would be better to install independent SIS files, so you will choose what you need and what you don`t...takes longer to install, but works better.

Yeah, would be a great idea!!! You wouldn't have to send thousands of e-mails to each person that asks you the single files...!! 8)

Someone of you boys have to tell me exactly what i have to do. i am new here. So, explain and i will start NOW !

first browse ur 9210 cd then open a folder name Pre installed then upload all the files in that folder here

and there is some more apps i think the folder is called 9210 application or something like that, also upload all the files in thast folder too

just to let u know there are loads of items to upload for you, if u have a decent connection it;s ok but if u hav 56k modem that;s gonna tkae a while

Anyone interested with 9210i preinstalled apps and addt'l softwares? its for version 5.34... post here so I can start a new thread with all the apps or whatever it is u request like fileman or something, dont forget its for 9210i v5.34 😃

btw... after reformatting and installing the apps one by one here's my accounting...

after formatting c and d...
install filemanager and switcher RAM mem= 4.4MB to 4.3MB
install all my apps RAM mem= 3.6MB (reboot) to 3.3MB
add wallpaper and with alarms RAM mem- 3.2MB (reboot) to 2.9MB

better than what I'm used to...
I'm not complaining... 😃
btw, I notice there's a strong correlation between the size of used space on the disk and low RAM memory. low space on disk usually means low RAM memory, I guess there's a need to defrag the drives... just a theory though.. :fadein:

I'm keen on moving heavy apps like realplayer to the MMC, but it has been installed by default in the big "All Nokia 9210i data" sis-file, so I guess the only way to do it is as you guys say;

Remove the default data, and manually install the different apps.

But, how do I maintan my contacts and calendar database (I've spent some time setting it up, don't wanna do that again...)? Is there a file(s) that can be copied to the MMC etc?

You can copy or move calendar.cdb no problem. However, you can't do anything with contacts.cdb - you always get the message "in use". What you have to do is create a new database within contacts and then copy all the contacts across. The sub-file is created on the MMC and there is no problem handling this file.

The only individual .sis file I had a problem installing was file manager - it always crashes part way through the install.

you can copy them across by just starting a backup process with filemanager or so.

What I do is start a backup session with filemanager which will close all running apps and than just copy those 2 files using pc suite.
THe same if I want to restore them.

FYI: I installed the files individually from the cdROM but it seems there are some files missing from the AllNokia9210 data.sis for example, there is no font installed if you install individually as oppose to the AllNokiaDat, also I have a problem installing MIDP applications, I cant install any MIDP apps but before with the AllNokiaDat I can, there's probably a connection between the two, I'm seriously considering a reformat (again!!! hehehe) and installing the AllNokiaDat this time, by the way, as of this writing my Ram now is down to 2.5MB reboot, 2.2MB after, Hmmmm....

thanks dazler, that's what you told me on a previous post, anywyz what i did now is to reformat and reinstall the allnokiadat, my RAM mem is 2.9 after boot then settles to 2.4MB, there's a diff between the allnokiadat and installing individual apps...

anywyz, for those who has MMC reader/writer, got good news for you... you can defragment your drive d:/mmc... just connect ur MMC using the reader/writer and using windows tools you can defrag the MMC, in my case the E: drive, nice huh? 8)
