Hi,
I have an E71 on "Three" UK (Hutchinson) and was doing some testing on the train betwen London & Manchester. When I have UMTS -> browsing and email is fine. But when I have a strong GPRS ONLY signal -> network is unusable - No browsing, no email, no data transfer at all. Just occasionally I might be able to access "Three" home page but that's it.
Having been used to a T-Mobile/Blackberry that works fine on T-Mobile/GPRS or O2/Edge I find the E71 lack of performance on "Three"/GPRS disappointing?
Any suggestions on what might be causing this or what to do? Where to look next?
Many thanks,
Stef
Three uses Orange as their backup network so it might simply have been a problem with Orange at the time. Or does it always do this?
I have the same problem, it's been noted before
http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum//forum/thread/88043/
and i suspect three do it deliberately to keep their data rental costs from orange down. Oddly, I can connect with fring and some internet text services like fishtext via gprs, but not use a browser.
Three denied there should be a problem when I rung them but I lost patience with their customer support. I have cancelled my internet max add on today to see if gprs browsing is allowed when I am paying a fortune for it, and if it does I shall be back onto customer service.
The fix suggested in my linked thread of the gold or silver add on wasn't an option for me when I rang three.
Post if you find a fix!

Thanks for the info.
I was on Silver/Nokia 6120 and "Upgraded" to an e71 with the same package but they guy in the shop said I could not keep "Silver" but would need "Internet Max" instead.
So it looks like "3" UK gave me:
* A Hardware upgrade but
* A Service downgrade!
Wow, I certainly didn't know that "3" "Doesn't do GPRS" (only GSM !!!)
Sounds like "Internet MAX" is really "Internet MIN"
😊
or should that be
😞
Yeah, it sucks. Could I confirm you are running the original firmware on your E71? That's what ended my customer support call, when they checked my firmware version and discovered i'd flashed the generic one. They didn't twig I had, just wanted me to 'upgrade' to their standard branded one. I'd be amazed if a firmware issue was the cause of this problem though.
I've now got rid of internet max and still gprs browsing doesn't work so that doesn't even provide an (expensive) fix.
I may try the internet light (use the phone as a modem) broadband option for a month to see if that allows it.
Maybe if enough of us complain they'll listen, cos i'm out of 3g signal for loads of the time. Since upgrading firmware i also have my phone on gprs only most of the time to improve battery too.

Yup, original firmware straight out of the box.

I hope so. It looks like Nokia/"3" are trying to position the E71 against the Blackberry but without GPRS they haven't got a hope! The whole point of my Blackberry is that I can use it almost anywhere, I certainly can't say the same for my E71 from "3" !
Well, before I got muzzled by trying to hide my firmware update from the 3 phoneguy, he was making noises about me sending the phone back to them to be looked at as he seemed to think it was a hardware fault. It obviously won't be, but with a bit of luck it may be a bug at their end of the network rather than deliberate policy. If you chase it up with them and get anywhere i'd be grateful if you could post up here again.
cheers
Jon

Phone them up and say that you want to change to x-series silver because you will be swapping your sim between an e71 and an n95 and you need silver so that the x-series apps will work on the n95, and say that you are fully aware that the x-series apps wont work on the e71 (even though they will but their system says they wont) you just need it for the data when it is in the e71 and that will work.
They should then add it for you, it's worked for me and has worked for everyone that I've told about it.

Many thanks,
I will try this and report back!

Doesn't, unfortunately, help those who never had a X-Series phone though...

You don't need to ever have had one, you just tell them that you have, or tell them that you have swapped one of your old phones with a friend who's also on 3 because he didn't like his n73, n95 etc.
Hope this works, but it is in a way depending on three to do us a favour, when in fact there is nothing in the internet max or other three contracts that says we can only get internet when we are in a 3G area.
I am deciding on the best plan of attack with the customer service guys because this a not acceptable on three's part, rather than customer's having unreasonable expectations.

Well I talked to a very nice Indian man who had to refer to his superiors... (Had to hang on for about 15 mins). He has cancelled Internet Max and put me back on X-Series Silver and says he has charged me 5 for the privilege.
When I am next in an Orange STRONG GSM/GPRS ONLY cell I'll report back. Maybe in a few days or so?
Thank again for all your help so far,
Stef
Well for all of five minutes today I got my very fist ever EDGE connection on "3" (Presumably Orange Edge?) and guess what, packet services (Standard E71 browser) worked!!!
This sounds promising...
However "3" auto texted me saying "Thanks for buying MobileMail" (?) So I am quite curious to see what comes on next months bill...
Maybe not so promising...
Unfortunately there is too much UMTS around here 😉 so I'll have to wait until I get out in the sticks before I can test GPRS and EDGE some more...
😊

Dont worry about this, mobile mail comes free as part of the x-series package same as free skype and free MSN. Mobilemail is the only one of these freebies that is also available as a seperate subscription for a monthly fee of 2.50. Thats why you got the "thanks for buying" text but you won't be charged for it.

OK I can now browse on GPRS and EDGE with native browser or Opera Mini (X-Series Silver Tarrif) however:
* Real Audio streaming seems to be blocked (Not a problem really)
* Nokia Email (final beta) will not work
So I still have no email on GPRS or EDGE.
Any thoughts/suggestions?
I could download the latest FINAL Nokia Email (Now renamed Nokia Messenger I think) or Profimail or am I on to a hiding to nothing?
(Suffice to say that my T-Mobile Blackberry - which I want to get rid of - works great for email on GPRS/EDGE)
Cheers,
Stef
I've just switched my e71 to gsm only and I can't stream with real player either, cant try it with nokia messaging as I no longer have it installed. Tried profimail, pop accounts work fine but I cant get gmail imap to work. Mail for Exchange works fine for emal, calendar and contact sync.

Thanks very much for this I'll give Profimail a go...
If it works on GPRS wiith multiple POP then its bye bye Blackberry...
😊
Just thought I would give you all an update:
E71 works well on "3" (Uk) with "X-Series Silver" package. Browsing and email works well on most (but not all) GPRS and EDGE only base stations. Profimail is a fantastic product (It does what it says on the tin!). I just shut my T-Mobile/Blackberry account after five years!
The Nokia S60 3.x is a great platform...
Thanks for your help,
Stef
