Programme 73 is now live (and also vis iTunes, as usual, in QVGA and VGA formats), mainly featuring a monster video review of a production sample of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. As per my AAS review, it's littered with both pros and cons, but there's no doubting that it'll find its very own market.

excellent video review of the 58oo steve! your opinions are always spot-on and 100% accurate! Good job!
One thing, while playing around with the s60v5 emulator, in sms editing in alphanumeric mode, i've noticed that after entering text, if we were to press the hardware "call" or "send" key, it closes the editor, in similar functionality to the green Tick Mark button inappropriately placed at the top left. This is the best possible workaround for fast texters, until nokia decide to fix it via firmware update.
Anyway good job dude, keep it up!! 😃
a great start to the new year, Steve! i really enjoyed this episode of your show. it looked great and was put togeher well, too. the one area that i disagree with your assessment of the 5800 was the maps section. i think that nokia did a horrible job optimising this app for this phone. i downloaded the free trial and tried to use it but found two major issues for me. one, the characters onscreen were far too small to be usefull while navigating. the display pics that you used are fine when stationary, but not when moving. all navigation info was far too small for me to see while driving (i am wearing the correct prescription contact lenses too). the second issue was the way the map data is displayed while navigating. the indicator for my location was right at the very bottom, which is fine, but the map area displayed above was pretty much wasted space. for example, if my next turn was 2km away, that street would be a couple of cm above my current location and the rest of the screen was showing map area that i am not going to need. i would much rather see a more zoomed in view so that the street names, current speed, distance to next turn, etc are much larger so that i can see the info at a glance. i found maps much easier to navigate with with every version of the n95 i have owned and also with the n82, only the e71 let me down enough to force me to try out garmin, which i have not looked back since using.
by the way, garmin runs on the 5800 but the letters and softkeys do not work, so you can only get so far into the app before you get stuck. i did manage to get far enough in to plot a course to a previous destination using garmin and it was VERY good. the voice commands were very loud and the screen was used far more effectively.
i did agree with your thoughts on the green check mark at the top of the t9 screen. for one handed use the t9 is perfect but the location of that arrow shows that the people testing the phone must have concentrated on the fullscreen qwerty. as the other person noted before me, you can simply type the message, then press the green send key and a sms will be sent and you will exit the editor but on thing that i found in my time with the 5800 was that the send/end keys are awkward to press when holding the device with one hand. when i would hold the device in my right hand i found it very awkward to press the end key and the opposite for when the phone was in my left hand.
Thanks guys. Yes, that workaround does kinda work when writing SMS, but for all other text entry needs, it doesn't. E.g. in Calendar, in Notes, etc.
Nokia need to relocate that tick button pronto....
I saw screenshot for s60's icon there, any special hint to make it work? Mine just opens the camera
Didn't work for me either. Only there because I hadn't removed it yet. Best Screensnap works well(ish) though....
Heey,
Great review but you know you're comparing the 5800 with a iPod touch in the beginning and not an iPhone!
Yes i think😉 steve knows what is in his hands! but what's the difference
Well no difference just funny :P
re: Steve o'Hear: yes, his voice is a bit unusual, but he's a great chap and knows his stuff. He's not on this show though and there are no current plans for a re-appearance. I'm always open to guests though, if anyone else out there has a good idea for a 'spot' 8-)
re: iPod Touch. For the 5 millionth time, I happen to have a Touch at the moment because I don't need the expense of an iPhone contract (I've got enough other SIMs around). For what I need (UI and App Store research), the Touch is just fine. Impressed that you could tell the difference based on my waving it quickly in front of the camera though 8-)
Suspect I'll get an iPhone 2 or 3 when it comes out though!!
