New E71 Owner - Few Questions :)

6 replies · 4,955 views · Started 12 January 2009

I just bought a E71 off ebay with the Garmin XT Software!! So excited as my current phone is good for nothing but music. A few questions

1) Since the nokia only has a 2.5mm jack. Does the HS-44 and AD-44 work with the E71? I've seen a lot of conflicting information online.

2) In general is it ok to store all my apps on the memory card?

3) do I need anything special to use this phone with T-zones, and is Tzones anymore restrictive than normal tmobile internet.

4) any software that is considered "must have" for this phone

Thanks so much!! I can't wait to get the phone and mess around with it!

1. Dunno
2. It's OK, but there's masses of internal storage so I put everything there
3. Dunno
4. Nothing that everyone would have to install. Depends on what you need.

It's a great phone, you'll (hopefully) love it

1. Yes
2. Yes, though I generally would recommed installing most apps to the internal memory and use card for multimedia (and for some apps, like dictionaries).
3. No you shouldn't - and yes I think it is, but not sure of details (e.g. may not work with some IM or VoIP_
4. I personally like Handy Taskman, you might also want to check Download where there are some free applications (e.g. Smart Connect which makes changing between cellular data and WiFi access points easier). Really depends on what you want software wise to be honest... lots of good stuff out there.

Bear in mind that some software must be installed on the main memory to work correctly; plus I have seen instances where installing software on the main memory leads to faster startup times for the software compared to when its installed on the memory card. I follow this rule: if the software is going to be auto-started (like Handy Taskman, Worldmate, Advanced Call Manager) then I install it on the main memory. Games I usually keep on the memory card since I don't use them often.

For programs on your device, here is what I have for reference:

Free

1. Nokia Conversation (now it works on the E71). This gives you threaded SMS, very cool.

2. Nokia Email (aka Ovi Messaging). This gives you free 'push' email to your device that integrates very well with the OS. Excellent if you have a data connection on your phone.

3. Advanced Call Manager (came pre-installed on my device). I use it after hours when I don't want to be disturbed by office/work calls 😃

4. Facebook App (from the Downloads! application).

5. Gmail (visit from your device). Although gmail works with Nokia Mail, I still have the native client because it has great threaded view.

Paid

1. Handy Shell I used this for the today screen replacement and for the fact that it allows me to search contacts via phone number. E71 allows searching by name (just start typing on the standby screen) but doesn't allow you to search via phone number. Just a personal opinion -- when I tried this on my E71 with the older firmware, it used to hang the device. I'll try it again now that I have the 200.x firmware to see if that helps.

Hope this helps! 😊

Hi,I'm using AD-44/HS-44 headset for my E71----works excellent, you can control music remote keys....,

Must have s/w is "Profimail" and Nokia "E-mail" apps,If you need power point go for Quick Office Premiere v6.0 or else 'Office Suite'.

me too me too! I know there a million apps I could get into but basically I'm just looking for some help using my E71, I've had it for a couple of months and I don't think i'm really maximizing its potential...

For example, I'm struggling with Psiloc Connect for connectivity - it just doesn't jump smoothly from WLAN to WLAN to WLAN(with an access page) to 3G and back... it generally knocks my email sync and internet connection off and I end having to fiddle with them manually or restart the phone...

The three basic things I want from my phone are:

1. push synced email - I am using the new Nokia Messaging, which seems to work pretty well when it's online, but doesn't stay online when I move from wifi to wifi to 3g (probably Psiloc Connect's fault?). Also new incoming email messages from Messaging don't show up on my home screen even if I choose notification from the mode menu, which is annoying.

2. web browsing - I'm running Opera Mini 4.2, which seems to be everyone's favourite. Again I'm happy with it because it gets rss feeds and I can define Psiloc Connect as its default access point (both of which are missing from Skyfire which I have too if I really want to watch a video). but again Opera doesn't always stay connected to the web!

3. sms - I am using Conversation, which is good, except it seems I've got two parallel inboxes, one the default, and also the Conversation thread..? so when I open a new txt notified on my home screen I go to the default inbox instead of Conversation, which is annoying.

I have about a million other questions (like why won't Internet telephone calls connect unless I've kickstarted a web connection in the browser?), but let's start with the basics..?

Thanks.

Look like I have similar demands - I really need IMAP and push email... Unfortunately it is not as solid on e71 as I thought. Default Mail app keeps loosing connection and don't connect automatically on changing connection.
Yesterday I've tested my trusty P1i and while it is so painfully slow compared to e71, it receives pushed email notification faster than e71 and it updates info about already read email (example: new mail arrived to phone, but I read it in gmail on notebook, so in web mailbox there are no new messages), while e71 does that after next new mail...
