5800 navigation without internet?

hi,
does my 5800 support navigation without using the internet? i tried a few time to start with maps but the small icon for gps data only gets a one yellow bar and nothing happends...

You just have to be patient. If you don't allow the device to upate its GPS data via the internet it takes really, really long to acquire a GPS fix. It helps if you are in the open field and not moving. I waited for more than 3 minutes while staying indoors and indefinitely while sitting in a moving car. After that experience I turned A-GPS on again.

I would very strongly recommend using the assisted GPS, otherwise the lock-on times will be pretty slow. You can get a GPS signal without a network connection, but it will take much longer for the phone to work out where it is.

The assisted GPS doesn't actually cost much at all because it's not downloading data, it's just asking where the nearest phone mast is.

The only data costs you should worry about would be the maps, but they can be pre-downloaded onto your PC.

You do not need data for GPS, assuming we are talking about Nokia Maps.

However, you get the following things when using data -

You actually get to find locations - the offline locations are very very limited, I rarely find anything Im looking for offline, be it postcodes, POI, etc.

Route calculation is much faster.

As said, GPS lock is far faster, but this is a seperate option from Maps.

can you set it up so it is only using the data to help find it's location and not using it to do other stuff?

perhaps the future location satellites will be able to give a faster lock on than GPS can but i think the EU's system is on hold but i think the russians are still going ahead with there's assuming it will be open to anyone who wants to use it i would also expect china or india to launch there satellite location system in the future.
