iPlayer app on 5800

Bought my 5800 at the Regents Street store on 23 January - love it.

However, when I used the iPlayer application on the device it reported a newer version was available and offer to update the application. I foolishly accepted and the original app was over written. The "updated" version took ages to load and then only had an ugly text interface. While I can get to the iPlayer page in the browser it does not fit the screen as the application did.

Be warned - do not update the version that came on the device. Any idea how I get the original version back?

I don't have it either.

I wonder nokia were selling a different version through the Nokia stores than there were via mail order.

Can anyone who bought the phone from the nokia store in person confirm what the installed firmware version (and whether an update is available) and what software is pre-installed.

Bought from the shop yesterday, had iPlayer in the applications.
It did say an update was available, and yes I did install it 😞

Hmmm what are Nokia UK playing at here ?

Shafting customers who don't happen to live in or around London is not likely to go down well.

BTW can anyone with a Red 5800 they picked up at the london store confirm the product code.

The one I got from the Online store is 0575581

That's the same product code as mine - and I can't update the damn thing to V.11

How about you?

mine is 0575581 - i got it at the regent street store.

it had iplayer - i upgraded it too. seems ok though. but it doesn't let you download shows, like the N96 version. which is a major let down.

could you upload or send me the iplayer app by any chance?

What the hell is going on????

No idea. Unfortunately Nokia UK Customer Service won't be open till 9am Monday so I don't think there's any chance of finding out before then (unless one of the AAS people know which email accounts to send some questions to).

I tried ringing them twice last night. First attempt I was told I was in a queue of one to which I waited 20 minutes then got cut off. Second attempt I was told the tech people were available this time and I'd be straight in - I waited 5 minutes before hanging up.

I emailed them today so hope to get a reply on Monday, otherwise I'll ring them up after work.

iPlayer will be available from the BBC shortly. I guess these things just take a while to work out sometimes.

I was in the first 100 at Regent Street and mine didnt have iplayer on. All i get when i installed it is a text page with links that dont work.

Mine had firmware 11

i got mine from regent st and it had iPlayer. (I didn't upgrade when it pointed out an upgrade was available, as the changelog it showed didn't seem anything useful). Anyway, it only allows usage via wifi - which is a bit crap as it lets you connect using your data connection, but then when you try and view a programme, it says you have to use wifi.

And then you find out that there's no bloody option to change the connection. I even set my connectivity/internet settings for the phone to wifi as priority 1 and data as 2, but iPlayer still connects at startup via my data connection and then says you need wifi to actually view any progs..

???

I've seen comment that this wifi only lock is deliberate to avoid problems with the quaility if you drop to a slow GPRS connection and keep the mobile networks from getting swamped by the amount of iplayer traffic.

No idea if this is actually true, but it's what I've seen.

BBC iplayer 5800XM
This works fine on my Nokia 5800XM bought from Nokia store with V10 on it. Only tried it with WIFI. Anyone with unlimited GPRS let us know if it works with that Please.

You sir are absolutely awesome!!!

I can confirm though that it does not work with GPRS - it gives a message, "Sorry, but to watch or listen to BBC iPlayer programmes you need to switch to a WiFi connection."

Many thanks for uploading it though - I never got it with my 5800 and been dying to get it!!

Very happy boy now 😃 (though quality not as good as I hoped, but I won't moan lol)

yes it oddly links to an N95 streaming version
rather then the higher quality iplayer ones.

I'm just uber annoyed you cant do the wifi download like the N96
that makes it usefull - wifi only is ok - but useless for commuting.

though that wasn't available on day one for the N96 so theres hope yet

I know this thread is about streaming the iplayer to the 5800 but I presume you guys know it's possible to download the DRM free iPhone content to your PC via a couple of free tools that are available ?

Run it through a quick convertor to optimise it for the 5800, copy over to the phone and away you go, high quality TV when you want to view it. 😊

When I got my 5800 it did NOT have iPlayer BUT after a dodgy theme fried the OS it was reflashed at a NSC with a generic FW and iPlayer was there! but I was told the apps ahd only been released on Friday last week BUT my Acuweather app was gone! and that was really handy

I'd recommend getting it via the Download! app on the phone in that case - it is the easiest way.
