Did you see Nokia's recent press release on the shipping of one million 5800 handsets? Does anything strike you as unusual about this? Me too. Why are Nokia deciding to shout about this now, when other devices rarely get the look at me treatment? Could it be that the Finns are starting to do some psychosocial marketing? Read on while I explain.

Really nice piece. Complete agree with what you are saying. Interesting times ahead!
well said. I'm one of the early adopter of this device and while initially impressed (first touch UI s60), was disappointed by the poor speaker reception during calls unless I had either a headset on or put it on speaker mode. In the end after much frustration, I sold it off and reverted back to my trustee P1. Don't get me wrong as the 5th edition of s60 has great potential IMO though they need to fix something this simple before launching it anyway...sigh!! So nokia had better 'blow their trumpet' when it comes to sales numbers in these difficult times else they'll be just another device manufacturer touting touch screen OS device that was made popular by the folks at cupertino...
Spot on. I was thinking along the same lines on Friday with the coverage of the UK launch. Much as it grates to think that those sensible Finns have to ape the Cult of the Fruit, if those are the rules of the game then those are the rules you have to follow. Looks like they may have finally got the message.
hi
i was unlucky not to be in london for the launch(one day after my bday so gift was right on time)
i did have the opportunity to fiddle with a 5800 for a few hours though.....
i will defend the 5800 in the most "concerning" factors of consumers(i think they are)
1. Applications- Agreed. Download! for nokia needs MUCH MORE work! In the defence of Nokia(read symbian) is that typing "s60 applications/5800 applications" into google will bring you a quite a long list of available applications. Yes again agreed that this should be like the apple app store....right on your device....but po-ta-to, pa-tat-o....does it matter HOW you get your applications? or does it matter that you have them?
2. not enough available applications- this is directed to the commentator who stated that the 5800 has hardly any applications available......
n95users.com/forum/nokia-5800/23011-5800-compatible-apps.html
3. the UI- Not as "eye candy" as the iphone but its S60 and anyone whos been using s60 for a while will get used to the UI very quickly......new users will as well as it is all very easy to use as with any S60 device.....
this is my little defence of the 5800......
had the earphone but new hardware replaced and the problem is solved
