For a while after I bought my N85 I was wondering why the speakers seemed to be worse than my old N81. Then, when I played the music on a lower volume, I noticed that the music seemed to sound fine. Therefore, I deduced that it wasn't the speakers were of lower quality than older N Series phones; it was because I needed to set the equalizer for a setting that was appropriate for the speakers as opposed to headphones. I deduced since the speakers could probably handle some higher and lower frequencies better than others, I played around with the equalizer until I got the settings in the attached picture. If you feel your N85 at high volume using speakers sounds distorted or otherwise sounds bad, I suggest you give this a try.
So, I don't think that the speakers are worse than old N Series phones, perhaps they are better (more sensitive and should use the new 8 band graphic equalizer to our advantage). Anyway, hope some readers give it a try and post their results, thanks.
Or, even if you come up with a better one than mine, please share it with us!

using your settings the sound is very tinny, i find it better set as rock.
i do think the speakers are worse than the like of the n95, i still have my old n95 and the sound is much louder without distortion , maybe nokia can fix this with a firmware update. its the same deal with the camera too, the n95 is better.
Hi, updated to different EQ...any suggestions?
BTW, I know that the speakers don't sound as good as N95, N81, etc, but I think it's more because of software (mostly, but not all, I have ears!) and not being set at a suitable EQ/Volume level for the speakers when in speaker mode.
Anyway, check out the new one, thanks.
i have had a n81 from last feb till 2weeks ago till i got this fone and i can assure you NO OTHER MOBILE with any settings come close to a n81's sterio speakers
the n81 was a proper music fone this n85 aint you can see the speakers arent the same quality just by looking at the grilles that cover them
i found the best settings are stepped down from the left to the middle the stepped back up to the right, dno how to take a screenshot or i would show you

Yeah, I know, I had an N81 for a year, too. I don't know what's the deal with Nokia and the new speakers...maybe the OLED made them cut corners on the speakers to keep the price down?
Anyway, I'm not that concerned, I don't usually use the device's speakers to listen to music, almost always headphones. Listening on headphones is quite good, in my opinion.
