Just a heads up that Carphonewarehouse stores got stock today
They are selling them as 02 PAYG units for 209 but they are standard unlocked units with no O2 branding V11 software
Hope that helps

Thanks FLASHYPHOTOS, was that 209 + the obligatory 10 top up? Was it red or blue?
Thanks
valerebel
Can anyone verify this? That seems a crazy price, since PAYG doesn't subsidise it at all, and they are charging 279 for sim free.
I bought a D600 on PAYG with Virgin at the CPW a few years back. It was an unlocked handset and was 119 but the sim free version was more.
I'm gonna go to my local CPW tomorrow. I can't see anything online to support a 209 PAYG price. In fact according to their website a 5800 on PAYG returns no hits at all.

Hi
It is the red one,
You can get around the 10 topup by giving them any O2 PAYG phone number, they then put it through as an "upgrade" without needing to put on the normal 10 topup, thats what I did with mine. (You don't get a new sim that way), but figuring most people who want one of these will have a sim already.
I went to the Mansfield Store they had 15 in stock, all standard boxed not 02 branded units.
Copy of invoice for those who seem to doubt the post!

Hi,
you can't do me a really big favour and check what the product code is (7 digit number under the battery probably something like 05xxxxx) and also exactly what the firmware version is ?
If the product code is 0575581 and the firmware is v11.0.08 Nokia have some serious explaining to do....

Hi
Its 0575581 and firmware 11.0.008.217.05
Hope that helps
Thanks for that.
Hopefully now that red 5800s are being sold by 3rd parties with the v11 firmware that will be enough to persuade nokia to actually release the upgrade
:frown:
Bugger it, I'm sending mine back to Nokia and hopefully getting one from Carphone Warehouse tomorrow!!
At least I'll save 40 and have an updated handset.
Wow. The pricing just keeps getting better.
Bought my unlocked 5800 XpressMusic for 209.95 as an O2 PAYG upgrade using one of my free O2 "unactivated" SIMS (it saved me paying the additional 10).
Mine also has v11.0.008 firmware (v11.0.008.217.05 Custom)
I'm not sure how I get the 10 free downloads from the Nokia Music Store though; there wasn't a coupon in the box as I thought! CPW did you pince it?
Has anyone else bought one from CPW and gotten a coupon?

"10 free downloads"? Where did you hear this?
Didn't get a coupon through Nokia or CPW with my new handset today. :con?

I've heard there's a new (presumably v12) firmware update due in early Feb... I think Nokia's biggest problem in the UK is that their customer support networks (website / CS / firmwares) haven't kept up with the handset demand. That's why we're seeing stock being sold with varying firmwares pre-installed.
I reckon the earlier shipped units have V11 installed and that more recent stock updates have reverted to V10 as thats the "world wide generic" firmware right now...
I would expect PAYG units to get sim locked soon enough as the operators ruin the firmware and force people to be many revisions behind - happy days.

Will it be hard to unlock a pay as you go phone? or will there a simple hack to unlock it again?
On my current nokia all i had to do was enter some code but then my phone is 5 years old so i guess they have better ways to lock them down now.
thanks
once unlocked it wont lock again - you just have to get the operator to do it - and they normally charge you 10-20 quid to unlock.
Hi,
This sounds like a great idea. Im on 02 anyway so can i just give them my 02 phone number then i get the 10 top up as well? im not entirely sure what the top up does.
Thanks in advance!

If you buy any PAYG phone from the CPW they expect you to apply a 10 (if paying by card) and 20 (if paying with cash). If you are an existing O2 PAYG customer, or if you have a free O2 SIM hanging about, you can just buy the phone for 209.95 without having to stump up for a top up.

PS... take your O2 SIM with you when you go to buy it.

Looks like the end of the deal at CPW.
Stores are now saying its not available on PAYG any longer through CPW.
Be interesting to see how long before it comes back and if the new stock are sim locked. Glad some managed to get them whilst available.
