In this, part 12 of my long running series on smartphone cameras, I look at whether any or all of Nokia's fancy scene modes and adjustments make any significant difference and I work out which ones you should ignore and which ones you should remember.... Can you just leave everything on 'Automatic'?

Please stop using the term "nitty gritty". If you believe the stories behind its origin or not - I and many others are uncomfortable with it.

Eh? What on earth are you talking about?

"Etymology: origin unknown"
I have never ever heard it used in a nasty context, I think it's getting into paranoia when we avoid certain words because they MIGHT have ONCE been used in a nasty way, even though there's no record of that happening.
EDIT: Ah, wait, I've found out what the fuss was about:

The thing is, if there's absolutely no proof this phrase was ever used offensively, why should anyone be uncomfortable about using it or hearing it?
After all here's a rather cautionary tale about the word "picnic":

Nitty-gritty, I like this word. What term should be banned is 'English summer'. I mean people wearing gloves? Come on.
nice one, steve! i especially liked the picture taken with sunny white balance
thought i'd share this nice trick with the "sports" mode: if you want to take a picture real fast and don't have time for focussing or switching to the sports mode, just press the shutter very quickly to the bottom and the picture will be taken instantly with a fixed focus; the only problem is that the shutter speed itself is not as fast as in the real sports mode so the final result might come out blurry
Keep it up Steve! You are my Encyclopedia.Nitty Gritty is funny and i like.
Quite useful. Including the tip of Emerher actually! I sometimes switched to landscape mode to trade focusing for speed, but this is much more flexible of course. And no edge enhancement, I know now!
As for the fluorescent setting, I found this can make quite a difference. But not always, and not always for the better, so it is a matter of trying for the specific light conditions.
One of the 'buried' settings I do find very useful is sharpness. If set to 'soft', it really reduces the unnatural edge artifacts present in many of the N82's pictures. The image then does benefit from a bit of sharpening afterward on a desktop, but this leads to far better results. I only wish the phone would remember this setting....
'English summer'?!?!?!?!?
Isn't that an oxymoron?
😉
BTW, bluebells = good choice. 😉

Well, I've got be honest that I find it deeply offensive. Why would you wish to take that risk? It really is something easily avoided.

Why are you offended?
Just like "picnic", there's absolutely no record of "nitty gritty" ever being used in an offensive way.
Why would you wish to take that risk? It really is something easily avoided.
I think you should read this article:
http://www.blackvoicenews.com/content/view/41888/3/
In short, avoiding words because someone mistakenly thinks they're offensive is a stupid thing to do. It's basically endorsing ignorance, encouraging people to believe whatever they want to regardless of the facts.
Exactly. The phrase "nitty gritty" has been used for years without there being any indication that there might be some hidden racial slur behind it. Just because someone has read one article implying that might actually be some alternative meaning (for which there appears to be absolutely zero support), we're all supposed to stop using what is an extremely common English expression. Sorry, that's just PC gone mad...
