Hi there i'm new here. Have just purchased an N95 8GB. It says in the manual that u can quickly switch between silent and general profiles by holding the hash key down. I could do this on my old K800i and it was very useful. However this dosen't want to work on the nokia, is it broken maybe. Not vital i know, but it is handy 4 me.

should do. some networks remove this though, i think orange is one that removes it.
Works on my N95 8GB (unbranded/unlocked, open market/retail device, not operator customized model).
Has always worked on it since firmware v10 to current v31.
If the operator support line 1/line 2 switching, the general/silent profile switching is overridden/disabled by the operator.
I can't speak 4 orange, but i am on T Mobile
