5800 questions

Hello ladies and gents,

I was considering purchasing the wonderfull phone that is the 5800. My main use for it will be web browsing, email and watching media. I just have a few questions which maybe you can help me answer.

First, for people who have the phone does the screen scratch easily?

I was considering going with t-mobile for the 30 month contract with free web. How is t-mobiles service?
Would you recommend another mobile operator?
How easy is it to get the phone unlocked from the operator?

Thanks

Hi if you put a martin fields screen saver on the phone it will never scratch. For Email, Browsing and viewing media this phone is BEST in class nothing comes close.
T-Mobile is the best service provider I have ever been with and their pricing is the best on the market. Why unlock you wont get a better deal elsewhere!

If you want to lock in yourself to one network operator, you can do so with a contract that gives you a different phone (or a contract without a phone), and then you buy a SIM free/unlocked 5800 and use it with that or any operator's SIM card.

So I am guessing from the replies that getting a phone unlocked from the operator is nearly impossible?

Why don't you call T-Mobile and ask them what it costs to have a phone unlocked from them?

I tried three times and got three different answers ranging from we will never do that to 3 months into your contract.

t mobile will unlock a phone. cost 15 though
many suppliers are currently shippin sim free versions as they have not customised the firmware
or locked the units down - act NOW!
209 from carphonewarehouse.

mine has not scratched - the bezel is raised which offers some protection. and i avoid puting it in a pocket with keys.

Hi

Like others I am using a Martin Fields screen protector, they cost about 10 but are worth the money, and in fact the screen protector is a smoother surface than the original screen!

I am using an unlocked 5800 with a "3" SIM, Pay-as-you-go, I pay 20 a month and for that I get 300 texts or minutes + unlimited (about 1G) of data.

Cheers
Gareth

I only wish to unlock so that I can use other sim cards abroad.

That makes sense to me try going to Car phone Warehouse take out a new contract (IF you are out of commitment) and when choosing your phone ask them if you can have an unbranded unlocked device, they did it for me when I got my N95 on T-mobile 18 months ago. If they dont have one in stock, tell them to get one in and go back they will pretty much anything to hit sales targets at present. Hope this helps:icon14:

Thanks for the info gents.

I was considering doing the same Gareth and getting the T-mobile solo for 20 pounds a month: 600 minutes unlimited text and web data of 1G.

I will definitely try carphone warehouse.

Do you think it will be difficult to get the 5800 unlocked in future?

Do you think phones4u would do something similar?

Both me and the wife have upgraded to this lovely 5800. Both on Vodafone. Mine was on day of release and Wifey 4 days after. Both unbranded and both un-sim-locked. Tried a pay as you go orange sim and worked a treat!

Personally I would rather wee on my own foot! than put one penny in the coffers of phones4U :icon13:
