E71 Apps: calendar, anthing else? Lots of questions...

Hi everyone,

I'm about to upgrade to an E71 on Three and want to "hit the ground running" when it arrives. I'm planning on using it as my main diary / organiser so was wondering what people out there think of the in-built calendar. Is it pretty basic? If so, which calendar application would you suggest?

Also, are there any other apps that you would recommend I download (either freeware or to buy)?

I've seen an app that turns your E71 into a TV remote control; has anyone had any experience of this?

Does the E71 come with a dictionary app? If so, does it have a xword / anagram solver? If not, can you suggest an app?

How about the web browser that comes with the phone. Is it any good? I've got used to Opera Mini on my 6288...

Any good games to recommend?

Would you suggest a virus checker? If so, which one?

Finally, is the email app that comes with the phone good enough? I'll probably use my E71 to access my pop email accounts.

Thanks in advance folks!

Bit disappointed that nobody replied :frown:

Anyway, I've now got my E71 and am very pleased with it. The calendar is pretty basic so I've downloaded trial versions of Papyrus and AquaCalendar.

I'm probably going to go for Papyrus as it's a bit cheaper and I prefer the look of it. AquaCalendar has more options but I wouldn't use most of them (more icons, texts and contacts accessible within the application). The only useful extra feature seems to be the search tool, but it's not often I'll need to search for an entry and can't justify paying twice as much for it.

As for other apps, I've installed WeFi but not tried it yet. Similarly joikulight. I've also downloaded several decent themes from symbianthemes.us.

I've not managed to find a working copy of RotateMe; can anyone point me in the right direction?

Am also intrigued about the Psiloc remote control application; has anyone got any experience of this?

Hey where'd my reply go?! 😡

I find the vanilla email and calendar applications on the E71 basic but Ive migrated from PalmOS where I used DateBk+ and Chatteremail+, powerful third party applications; I figured I was going to find standard stuff basic! After testing many email solutions and debating with myself if I should fiddle with third party calendars, I have decided to use the standard applications. Mostly this is because they do what they do well enough to keep me happy and because I am synchronising my information with Google Calendar and in due course a corporate Exchange server (Im working notice at my current employer so have disabled this, Im sure to enable it with the new employer in due course).

But Ill have a look at Papyrus as it might do what I need it to do; do you know how well it can sync using GooSync to Google Calendar?

I was unable to get WeFi working with SmartConnect as I wanted; it wouldnt connect to my home WLAN despite giving it the credentials, so I just use the WLAN as another entry in the connection group no biggie really. But certainly, BirdSteps SmartConnect is very useful if you have access to WLANs and want high speed / low power internet access. WLAN appears to uses less power than 3.5G; non-HSDPA 3G modem access is also quite juicy in the battery department.

Sorry Ive not tried using the E71 as a universal remote control; the IR port is on the top left hand side so Id have to use a funky angle to use it. More to the point, she-whom-watches-too-many-soap-operas-with-Australian-chicks would get very upset if guns-n-cars television kept reappearing and Im all for a quiet life at home! 😉

Not used Google calendar (or GooSync) so don't know how well Papyrus syncs with it. It seems pretty seamless with Outlook though, and has special "iSync" and "MS Exchange" settings to ensure they are sync'd properly.

Goodo! I'll have a look at Papyrus and see how well it works for me.... Thanks for the tip!:icon14:

I haven't used Goosync specifically but I have synced with other SyncML servers. It doesn't matter whether you use the built in Calendar, Papyrus, Handy Calendar or Aqua Calendar. They all save and retrieve from the builtin calendar database and its the database that gets synced to the SyncML server.

You should take a look at Handy Calendar before you buy Papyrus. It has a much more compact and usable design and it doesn't crash ever...unlike Papyrus unfortunately.

Papyrus does have the ability to sort and filter tasks by category though, which is useful if you are syncing over SyncML or MailForExchange (not so much if you sync to PC Suite as PC Suite doesn't pass categories in the sync).

Gotcha. That was what I wanted to check. Most PalmOS applications are the same, too, which is handy. Same database, different front end...:icon14:

I looked at Handy Calendar in the past but for some reason that escapes me, I didn't get on with it. It was possibly "newness overload" and not understanding the vanilla stuff to know what I'd miss most of all.

I used to love the link contact to appointment feature of DateBk+ on my PalmOS devices...

I just got an E71 on 3 too!Goosync does it's job fine and surprisigly quickly. From goosync web page you can send the settings to the phone, then when you go to the "sync" icon, all your details are right there!
Am goint to try Handy Calendar.Worth a go!
