Hi folks,
I am starting a new thread with this as noone has actually come up with the answer yet.
Can Orange unlock a phone if I am prepared to pay their charges? I don't mind paying their 20 unlock fee, or 12 months line rental in advance, but I want the phone unlocked immediately, not in like a week.
Does anyone know?
Thanks in advance.
Andy
I was told at my local Orange store that you could get the phone unlocked immediately as long as you pay the 12 months of contract off in advance and pay a 35 unlocking fee.
Nah its definately 20 for the unlock fee.
Seems to be 7-10 days for the codes too.
well u have to pay the remainder of ur line rental and a 20 unlock fee.
My suggestion is that u buy it cheap on a high tarrif - change the tarrif the next billing month to the lowerst tarif which is 10 a month (high speed data tariff)
pay off your line rental and get an unlock code - this works out way cheaper than getting a sim free handset. 😉
I don't know about the codes but I was 'assured' that the fee had gone up from 20 to 35. Maybe the guy didn't know what he was talking about!
example!
get it from onestophoneshop @ 35
first months line rental = 75
second month and onwards till the 12th month = 110
unlock fee = 20
you have a sim free sony ericsson p800 for 240
They wont let you change tariffs after one month surely?
Also, Carphonewarehouse told me today that the P800 wasn't available on "Data Only 10 a month" tariff, although they could've just been wrong (they often are).
yes u can - the reason carphonewarehouse wont sell it on that tarrif is cos they dont get much commission for it.
and the reason they tell u that u cant change ur tarrif for 3-4 months is cos thats how long u need 2 bee on that tarrif for the dealer to get their commission based on a higher tarrif.
Orange will not stop u changing ur price plan at all - if you look at their terms u can change the plan once a month from your billing date.
As I understand it you cannot downgrade your tariff for three months unless you buy it from an Orange shop directly. Otherwise the dealer will claw back the discount.
Ok, I have my P800 from Orange, Im very happy with it, but why oh why do they have to whack there logo at the bottom of all there phones! It looks terrible and really makes the phone look cheap. Can anyone suggest where I can purchase a new (preferably official) casing piece that clips over the keypad section, in-case you are confused as to which piece Im referring to, its the piece which you get two of, one if you use your keypad the other if you decide not to use the keypad
Many Thanks
Andy,
Did you receive a definitive answer to your question about unlocking ?
I am curious becuase I have just about had enough of the sim-free
fiasco and am willing to buy through Orange but would like it unlocked
asap.
I suppose the real question is if you start on a high tarriff
(an example has been 55) you can then get the phone for
199 but then change to a 10/pm tartiff
can you then pay off the 11 months (110) plus the
unlocking charge immedialtey and have an unlocked phone
within the next week/fornight for the sum of
(200+110+55+35) = 400 (approx)
??????????????????????????
This is a sum of money that I would be quite happy
to pay at the moment.
thanks in advance
I did look into this properly before I bought mine, and yes it appears there are no catches, provided you buy it from a proper Orange shop, not 3rd party Orange dealer.
I haven't even asked for mine to be unlocked yet, as the Orange shop I went to didn't know about the 199 55+ tariff so I'm going to have to go and have a refund-resale to get a further 50 off. Only when I've done that will I change to the HSCD tariff and then request my unlock code.
I hope to get this resolved today (ie get the ball rolling on the unlock code) but we'll see.
Orange custy services said it would take 7-10 days (but he had heard of them taking 2 weeks in rare cases).
Thanks very much,
look forward to the update.
Now all I have to do is find a phone .....
Carl
Just found a retailer in London who can unlock the P800 (West Kensington).
Going to pay them a visit on Saturday methinks.. or at least try a couple more dealers who may be able to do it for me.
I would be very interested in this, you want to ask how they are going to unlock the phone though, with my J5 when I made a service cable and tried to run an unlocking program (not one that generates the code to input manually) I rendered the firmware unusable, luckily I had the necessary resources to restore the firmware, but if I didnt I dont think Sony would have covered my phone repair on there warranty
let us know how the unlocking goes andy
I just tried using nail varnish to remove the orange logo from my phone, and it works a treat!
Just put a dab of nail varnish on the logo and rub, make sure you dont rub with anything harder than your nail or you may leave small scratches,
Andy hasn't responded but I can confirm that
there is a shop in West Kensington which has
a sign on the door saying
"Unlock your P800 here"
and what's more, you can!
( for a reasonable fee - whilst you wait )

Do the sim free ones arrive tomorrow or next week? 😉
Sorry guys - mad weekend.
Yes - I did end up going down there on Saturday after phoning about 30 places around Birmingham on Friday night with no avail.
The guys in there (one of which even recognised me from esato.... freaky...) did the phone in about 5minutes and it works perfectly.
Was a bit of a mission (especially as it sounds like there is an improved eshop version being deliverred this week) but was well worth it.
30 was a bit steep considerring the time taken, but go get it done if you have chance.
I believe they use a T28 unlocking cable (not a T68 apparently) and I know if you have one of these it can be done by a company in Yeovil across the web. PM me if you want more info, I can't guarantee if it works or not, but I found this on Friday and it looked like a good service - 10 for the codes, and they sell the cable for 13.
My P800 is next to me now with the orange logo (which didnt come off with nail polish remover) on Voda with unlimited gprs... very nice indeed!
If only it did GPRS as well as voice simultaneously...
I phoned up orange today to lower my tariff to the high data plan, there were a few complications, the admin department had to update the high data package to allow for GPRS with the P800, which wasnt originally enabled for some stupid reason!
The unlocking people should give me a ring very shortly I pay the remainder of my contract (10 a month including Orange Care insurance) I pay them a further 20 and they unlock the phone!
Not bad, I got the phone for under 400 with a years insurance!
Andy_P try using cotton wool, you may need to rub for around 10-15 mins if you dont want to leave any mark whatsoever, its defiantly worth it the phone looks so much better now.
Important to anyone who is thinking about doing this, make sure you detach this piece from the phone before applying the nail varnish remover.
As an aside, since (I presume) Orange only label the removable section at the bottom, whats to stop us phoning SonyEricsson and saying we lost that bit? Surely it cant be that expensive to replace... 😊
Oh, come on Durzel. They can't even supply the SE Shop with phones never mind spare parts 😊
Hehe 😊
I still haven't got mine, but this time around its moreof due to my laziness :P
I did use cotton wool, and rubbed for a few minutes.. Will try again.
The service centres havent got stock of the replacement parts yet as far as i know.
