Exclusive: BBC iPlayer now complete on the Nokia 5800

The BBC have just released a full, standalone (i.e. not Web-hosted) version of their hugely popular iPlayer for S60 5th Edition, specifically for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. This runs slickly and includes the 'Download' feature first seen on the likes of the N96, where you can grab DRM-ed programmes for watching in the next month or so, offline. To get the new version of iPlayer you need to go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/iplayer.wgz in Web on your phone. Read on for screenshots and extra comment.

Hi Steve,

I am so frustrated!!!
I was number 8th in the queue on release day so you can tell i'm not a patient person, and it seems likes the people who brought the phones first are being made to wait the longest? that doesnt make sense to me.

I've upgraded the BBC iplayer but i'm stuck on v11.0.009 until Nokia release it for Generic RED UK models 😞

I can confirm that the iplayer download function DOES NOT WORK will that level of firmware 😞 😞 😞

Hi guys .. yeah i've been eagerly the for the download feature as well.. the iplayer works flawlessly as already mentioned but on my red generic version stuck on firmware 11.0.008. someone told me i can download the firmware by using my phone directly OTA but it doesn't have server settings under device management so i'll have to rely on the PC update

it seemed to crash when i did a search (on v11.0.009). But i have no wifi at the moment so no sure if the download works or not - i suspect ill need the v20. which im sure will come along soon enough - if everyone just chills a bit 😊 it may be held up from rolling out by the lock code bug. so you see why it rolled out in bits now?

You will need the v20 firmware. Look like it adds the necessary OMA DRM 2.0 support (of fixes it).

It installed successfully on my 5800 with v20 firmware.

As expected it just says "sorry, programmes cannot be accessed outside the UK" if I try to actually download anything, because I'm not in the UK.

Unexpectedly though, it even blocks access to the BBC World Service radio archive, which is only intended for listeners outside the UK. Bit stupid...

Actually, the people who bought the phones first were in selected countries at the end of 2008 (Spain, Finland, Russia etc). The UK only got the 5800 in 2009.

But then they wouldn't be able to use iPlayer (because the BBC only allows it to work in the UK), so it's all a bit unfair...

Sorry, I was talking about my phone, which is a UK model, but should have been alittle more specific I guess.

I could have brought an import from another country via Ebay etc, but thought I would wait as patiently as I could to buy one from Nokia direct in the UK, hopefully that way i'd get all the firmware updates with no problems. turns out I was mistaken.

Now people who waited for the blue phone in the UK are happily using the extra functions that I cannot.

I am dissapointed that in this case, the people in the UK who got up at 3 in the morning to drive 50 miles into london and stand in line for 3 hours are having to wait longer for a firmware than someone who wanders into a shop today and casually buys one.

Should I expect more? Probably not, and is it the end of the world? Probably not, I still have what I consider to be the best phone in the world, well except for maybe the blue version.

I am such a fan of this phone that I am due to release a freeware game for it in the next day or so, but I am really dissapointed by Nokia in this matter.

I certainly won't be queuing as I originally planned to when the N97 hits the shelfs.

That's impressive, Ratkat. Did you have to make any changes to the iplayer download? I too have an E71 with 200.21.118 firmware and have downloaded iplayer.wgz from bbc.co.uk slash mobile slash iplayer (sorry, I have insufficient posting history here to be able to provide the full URL!)

This installs iplayer 1.60 on my E71 and I can navigate through the Highlights/TV/Radio/Channels/Dates/etc sections, but no list of programs ever appears. Eg. from [Home] I can click on [TV Highlights] and the arrow to the left of the text changes between right-pointing and down-pointing - indicating that a list of programs is opening/closing, but I don't see any list to select a program from!

Any ideas? Simon.

Same here with my E71. Would love to know the secret. Version 1 works fine but would really like so download a few programs for future viewing. I'm on the latest firmware so any tips RatKat?

So IF genuine, are you planning on SHARING the How To with us, in which case we'd thank you...

...Or just gloating, in which case you won't be winning any friends or influencing people round these parts bonny lad *lol*...?

Ratkat, I'm sure a lot of readers are hoping you'll share with us how you did this (I know I certainly am).

The BBC seem to have changed the config files for v1.6, so the old hacks don't seem to apply (can anyone else confirm this?).

Please help!

Cheers

Hey Ratkat,

C'mon you've got to tell us whether this is straight up.

I skimmed through the code and there didn't seem to be any model specific limitations in it, so how did you do it? Or is it just a scam?

I'm of the opinion that given the repeat requests for him to clarify things here, plus me posting a comment on his YoutTube clip itself, asking the same, and yet his clear lack of response, that this is nothing but a whole load of utter bull.

If not Ratkat, it is totally incumbent upon YOU to reply to the comments for you...

Hi

Can anyone help me please? I've got a Nokia 5800 on v20 and I've had a problem with iplayer whereby every time I try and search for a programme, it boots me back out to my main menu.

I downloaded V21 OTA this morning and was hoping this problem would be solved, but it's still the same.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Jane

This downloads TV fine for me, but no radio?? Its only radio I am interested in
