How to take better photos on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Another in our continuing series of definitive Nokia 5800 XpressMusic tutorials, in this piece I advise on taking better photos with the device, including some example images taken yesterday as proof of what can be achieved. Bonus link: Tzer2 talks a beginner through using silent mode and flight mode on the 5800, explaining the basics and subtleties of profiles.

Read on in the full article.

Now you guys are really covering that device like nothing ever before. (and making it much more painful to keep waiting for the N97 and not just going out to buy one of these...)

Nemoi, most of what we write about the 5800 will apply to the N97 (though the N97 will have a much better camera), as they both use S60 5th Edition.

The main reason we call them 5800 tutorials is because it's the only S60 5th device out at the moment.

However, there are definitely going to be more S60 5th devices from Nokia (the N97 and others) and probably from Samsung and Sony Ericsson too, and the idea is to eventually have these tutorials cover a wide range of Symbian phones from various manufacturers.

Of course a lot depends on manufacturers sticking to certain common interface standards, as variations will make tutorials more complicated to do. Hopefully they'll keep the main menu items the same across all devices, for example.

Great article on the 5800XM. Really appreciate the help with the camera but to be quite honest, there is really not much that can be done unless you are shooting in brightly lit areas, say out doors in sunlight or indoors with lots of light. The flash pretty much only works if the subject is 5 feet or less. I understand Nokia wanting to save money and make an affordable phone but then again the 5800XM is not targeted at a phone market but at an audible media market so actually they did the right thing. Anyway, thanks for the articles. Much of your info can be found in user manuals if people would simply bother to look.

Unregistered, I think you're right about the 5800 being aimed more at music lovers than photographers. It's not the best camera in the world, I don't think anyone should buy the 5800 expecting it to be as good as an N95.

If you want a touchscreen S60 with a high quality camera, you'd probably be best off waiting for the N97, or perhaps some other Nseries touch devices which haven't been announced yet.

So true, but Nokia (like all manufacturers) seem to write the manuals in rather dry language which people don't necessarily understand.

Hopefully we provide a more lively alternative! 😊

i am an ex N95 user (i was dreading the day i was going to say those words), now using the 5800.↲
Obviously the N95 is going to be tough to beat and this phone is just a 'carrot' to what the N97 is going to be like, but take it from me, it has almost everything my N95 had, with the added touch interface. This is a great phone to get familiar with before the N97. My rational was that if i could not like the 5800 for what it offered, then i mule not like the N97 purely because of the touch. ↲
It is great that AAS is covering this phone in great detail. But roll on 2009, i can hear my N97 on the production line calling my name. 😊
