Nokia hints at 8 MP cameraphone for MWC

On the Nseries Innovation News Desk, an official blog on Nokia's Nseries.com website, there's a teaser post with a photo taken by a Nokia device. Closer examination reveals that the image is 2448 x 3264 pixels, that's around 8 megapixels, suggesting that Nokia will be releasing a new Nseries device at MWC with an 8 megapixel camera. We'll have to wait until Monday to find out more though.

Read on in the full article.

Ah, the megapixel arms race continues...

I bet it will all end at about 20 megapixels. The count will carry on going up, but no one will care beyond that point because it will be as good as photographic film.

And video capture is most likely going to stay VGA@30FPS?
That would mean that stills would have 26.6 times higher resolution.....

Video capture is definitely going to improve.

In fact there are some pretty strong rumours that we'll see some rather impressive S60 video capture technology unveiled at MWC...

Middle of the day shot of a sparkling white building. This is the kind of setting where even the tiny sensor of the 5800XM would have done an exceptional job. Obviously somebody at Nokia read your article on how to take better photos, Steve 😊.
Unfortunately, this teaser tells me nothing about the quality of the sensor in this new 8MP handset; and, as a consequence of this, it fails to get me excited.

Not with the crap lenses and sensors they are using in phones. I laugh at the 8MP camera phone pics I see all with awful details and purple haze. They are such a waste of memory space and the time the camera takes to save that bigger file.

At this point 5MP is already more than enough for a camera phone. What they need to do to actually improve the picture quality is get better optics and bigger sensors. The rest is a useless game.

Sorry for that, ive just heard that they will delay their 12mp handset from samsung, instead they will showcase a phone with a pico projector

Well, it depends on which film camera you're comparing it to.

A 20mp cameraphone would probably be as good as a typical 35mm point-and-shoot film camera.

Totally agree, but alas it seems that consumers are stuck in the mentality of thinking that more megapixels = better camera.

So many people buy gadgets based on the raw specifications, and never really think about quality instead of quantity.

I bet a lot of people will see "8mp" and think that automatically makes it better than 5mp or 3.2mp cameraphones, regardless of what the photos actually look like.

I don't think the announcement is coming as soon as the MWC. They just announced the N97 not even 2 months back guys!! It's release is more than a month away.

What analysis we can come to with that image is that "un-surprisingly", Nokia is actually working on 8MP Camera Sensors. And we shall see a 8MP phone announcement this year for sure.

AFAIR, Nokia usually makes one major phone announcement per event - E Series or N Series. Nokia World was N series, and we all know that E75 is coming in MWC.

So am not holding my breath waiting for this 8MP phone. They really don't want to make their next flagship N97 a old dog even before it is released. They have learnt their lessons with N96 / N85.

Save the file and check the EXIF data in the JPG

It says it was taken on a Nokia N85 at 6:14am on 5th January, and its been edited in Adobe Photoshop CS3

I'm really impressed with this photo. I have a strong feeling that this new 8MP shooter is going to be something quite special. There is clearly some aggressive noise reduction stuff going on, but not really at the expense of detail.

Go on Nokia, give us all a Valentines gift, give us a video from this beast!

I won't be happy. After the N97 announcement which disappointed without a Xenon flash I bought an N82 thinking that the flagship device won't have a better camera! I wandered why Nokia didn't have an answer to the marketing friendly 8 Megapixel of every other manufactuer.

Nokia will give us 8MP, lovely lens and then undermine the whole thing with a lame lame lame 2-LED flash solution. Aaaargh! When will they learn how important Xenon is? Without it you need to take a separate digital camera for night shots - the one time you don't want to be carrying extra stuff around! Please Nokia, XENON, or I'm not buying.

Also, this nonsense about the EXIF data - has it occurred to anyone that you can edit EXIF data? And that leaving the new model's number in the EXIF data might just give the game away? Come on... 😊

Well it's a shame if it won't be in the N97 because that would help it shift a few extra units. 5 megapixels is fine for a cameraphone but if I was a Nokia big cheese I'd put an 8mp camera in a phone to entice the people that believe the more megapixels you have the better the photo quality.

Nokia's next flagship imaging device will have a Xenon flash. I can't say for sure, because the phone hasn't been released yet, but I don't think Nokia would be stupid enough to release an imaging flagship with crappy led flash. Xenon flashes need to marketed more aggresively. Adverts with a night photo taken using a led flash, agaist a photo taken with a Xenon flash camera phone.

What will be more interesting is if this device is going to be touch enabled or not. I pray it is.

A touch enabled high spec N series phone with a Xenon flash and 8mp would be a big seller. Perhaps that news is waiting to be revealed at MWC next week?

Eldar wrote about this in his C905 or inno8 review in the middle of last year.

As I remember the pictures were supposed to be amazing even in early beta & it was supposed to be a non-touch screen phone.

We'll find out in a couple of days as to whats what.

I dont know anything about photography but as an amateur the picture is less than impressive to me. The sky looks like a painted blue and the whites look "un-natural". Too much post processing maybe? But then again what do I know! 😊

Not remotely. Megapixels cannot add image quality. Have a look at some of the oldest Digital SLRS and see what they accomplish with 3 or 5 megapixels. Its still 10x better than any 8MP phone camera.

Go have a look at the size and quality of the lens and sensor on a 35mm camera. What you have on phones today is more or less a pinhole in comparison. You cant take these phones up to 100Mp and the image will still be garbage.

All they are doing right now with this nonsense on phone cameras is making the picture take more time to save - and eating up storage space. Not a single thing more.

Two new E Series phones, Ngage coming to E Series, Full OVI Support for E Series.
And no 8MP Phone.
