Sony Ericsson has just unveiled Idou, a flagship Symbian phone with 12 megapixel camera, Xenon flash and 16:9 aspect ratio touchscreen. Or so reports Rafe, at a pre-MWC event. More detail and pics in this story shortly...

Read on in the full article.

some people on esato claim it will run on the new symbian foundation os... that will be really interesting to see as, clearly, the screen looks nothing at all like a symbian s60 device should...

I'm Really excited about mwc this year!

AAS, keep it up on the top-notch live coverage!! 😃

😮 Thats it, i'm now turning off every other RSS feed i have running on my tablet EXCEPT mobi/Symbian feeds for the next few days!!!

Sounds like the most promising phone from "Ericsson" since the T28.

SE has done a comedy show, by showing a concept phone...

This is not even a proto... Even if they have a proto or device they cant release it (like P990, x1) for 9 to 13 months... Or they may even cancel like P5...

There he goes, Steve is hating already.
Can't wait for the review in which in a head to head against ANY Nokia he deems the SE garbage and declares Nokia the winner.

Well, if they've actually created a mini site for it, it's reasonably safe that it will see the light of day.

That's one sexy piece of equipment, but to be fair to Steve, it is months away from release, and we all know how easily things can go south, especially for SE phones. 😃

If it's an all new OS, it might be just that little hard for it to gain market share.

I've been seeing a lot of comments on the 12 mp cam, The sensor on this phone looks way bigger than the current phones on the market.. could be a prototype flaw.hope not.

the chipset has been available for a while now
.. I fully expect Nokia to put it in an N series before the end of this year
.. SE have done the right thing by coupling it with Xenon (Nokia?? hint hint)

nice to have a bit of competition in the Symbian world at last. Thanks Samsung and SE. 😊

Just updated the story. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to get them answered when I can.

And the good news is that, since this is a concept phone, it will only cost you concept money.

i don't hate s-e. I was a s-e nut around the time of the P900... I only used the word 'concept' because that's what S-E used.
Don't get too excited though - remember the X1 from last year and the relative turkey that turned out to be...

Among 200 000 000 Symbian os users, how many do you think are going to buy Samsung or SE over Nokia?

ok not as huge as Nokia - but they sure have marketing budgets - if they only matched marketing with proper support (you getting this Samsung?) then a reasonably large number of potential customers would go for SE or Samsung devices.

you don't need a big % of 200 million to make a significant number of sales.😊

So because it is not a Nokia phone / concept, it must be crap?

I really hope SE will customize the applications inherited from s60. The Messaging client and Contacts are hopeless to use... A lot of tweaking, or should I say complete re-design, is required to get those applications in a shape that allows competition with iphone, or even with SE's own OSE-phones.

Shame it has no standard 3.5mm headphone socket or standard USB port, just the Sony Ericsson Connection

Are you sure that's a microSD slot and not an Memory Stick Micro slot, being a Sony phone? 😉

If S.E. decide to release this phone in 2010, they are joking themselve, because Nokia, Samsung are already presenting similar phones right now. I am a S.E. fan and I think it would be very stupid to wait fot 2010 for this device. Meanwhile I am thinking about purchasing Nokia 5800.

I'm a Nokia user, because i really love Nokia phones but Nokia doesn't seem to produce a new real Smartphone, Xenon flash... a 4x4 cellphone like my N82... I think if Nokia think keeping using their weird "dual led 3rd gen" with a 10 or 12 mpx (now they're using with the new 8 mpx N86!!!!) i'll consider buying this Sony Ericsson, because this Idou really have the things what i expect from my next phone...

I hope that the flash will not be as weak as the on on k800
