Hi all,
Don't know whether anybody else has noticed this but their is one major item missing from the Pop3 configuration, that being to download the messages and leave a copy on the server ?
Yes it can just download headers, but if you delete these it will delete the message on the server for you the next time you send / recieve not really helpfull, and unless I'm being stupid I can't find anyway to tell the device not to delete the messages from the server ???
What do you recon the chances are of getting Sony Ericsson to add this to a future version of the mail client software ????
Or should I look at using another Pop3 Client ?
Regards
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for SE to add anything...
It astounds me that SE have created an MS Smartphone killer... this thing kicks the SPV all around the room, sits down, takes a swig of JD and starts kicking all over again... BUT... there are a couple of things they need to add to complete the victory.
1) MS Office compatible document editors!
We need this QUICKLY... I migrated from a Nokia 9210 and the ability to edit small excel spreadsheets and word docs directly on the device was a godsend...
2) Fax!
Ok, so most people believe that faxes are an out of date technology, and I agree... however, my local car repairshop don't have e-mail so when they want me to view a bill before paying the immortal words "do you have a fax machine?" come out to play... again, with the 9210 this was not a problem.
3) Improve the mail client
Leaving a copy of the messages on the server is pretty much a "must-have" ... how many people REALISTICALLY are using the P800 as their main mail client??? p.s. I can almost fogrive them for this though because of SMTP Authentication .... thank-you-thank-you-thank-you!
4) Opera pre-installed
Nuff-said
Probably more but I'm too busy interested in getting all my stuff to work on the P800 ... it's a really cool phone and about the best looking PDA I have ever owned!
you need to disconnect before deleting the mail headers on your P800 inbox. works for me on WAP & PC-Synch connections.

Yeah, but then when you connect next, it goes ahead and deletes the mail from the server anyway!!!

Yup, tested it today and that is the case. I'm glad you mentioned this because I nearly lost a bunch of important email.
This feature should be added to the phone as high priority imo....

This is a crippling feature of the email client IMHO... It would be mitigated if the email client let you fo "mark all as read" to get rid of the new mail icon in the task bar thingy...
Totally agree with this - i've had to change the way i deal with emails now because of this - i've now emptied the hundreds of emails from my primary IMAP server onto a 'store' folder on my harddrive, and keep the account empty - then when i receive messages, I can look at them on my P800 or computer, then when i've got them on all devices i want, i move them to that store folder again.
This is really irritating, but i have to do it this way if i want access to new emails on my P800 - i can't have that blasted mail icon permanantly on my display, as i'll constantly be opening up my phone to check for new messages. Nor do i wish to download 500+ emails to my P800 just so they are all 'read' and the icon disappears - wish we could mark headers as read, then i could leave all my emails on my server, then go back and look at any i want from my P800 as well as my computer. 😞
So after all this talk, has anyone worked out a way that you can d/l mail on your p800 while still leaving the email on the server!? I cant belieive this has been left out! Its almost pointless otherwise.
Is there not any better email software avaiable that allows you to leave mail on the server? As in, the built in internet browser is cack but you can get opera. Now the built in email is cack so is there anything else?
Cheers

Yeah, P800 is definitely a "I'm away from my normal kit and need some way of keeping in touch" device, so the omission is strange.
I simply set up a distinct POP3, and then enable/disable a forwarded copy of my main email when I travel. I set up a "Reply to" on the phone so mails from it are transparent.
Since the mail the phone sees is only a copy, whether it gets deleted or not is irrelevant, because Outlook will always get the "original" one at home anyway.
Certain emails (such as my one on this site) go direct to the phone, and then copy the other way as a backup.
But... there was something about the sync process with Outlook handling message deletes for you, I think it has something to do with not deleting from the phone, but the sync will remove them from the phone once deleted in Outlook. This only works if you are one of the [three] people in the world who actually keep their inbox tidy.
I agree -- The mail client needs to be fixed
The lack of Mail featuers onlong with the lack of Audio Fast forward/backward means that the P800 falls way short of my needs.
I really feel like returning the P800! But the fact is like most folks I do not have the time to follow such stuff up. I will just have to wait and hope they deliver.
How can we put pressure on SE ??
The work-around this is to access your email via PC then download then move the emails to a folder. Next time you logon with the P800 you will notice the emails are gone. I guess in essence all email msg management will have to be done online or with another POP3 checker like Outlook.
What would be very nice would be an html email facility

Try setting to IMAP rather than POP3,
or you could just use the brower?
I actually *want* to delete POP3 email off the server, and have been unable to do this for the last year with an iPAQ3970/T68i combo, whereas I could delete e-mail on my old Nokia 9110 before it was stolen.
I download e-mail throughout the day, on my PC when at it at work, but otherwise on my P800. On the latter I delete the Spam headers straight off, download e-mails I want to read and delete, and either do not download, or else download and don't delete (on the P800) e-mails I want to save. When I next synchronise with my PC, I get a small number of e-mails that I want to save/read on my PC, plus any new e-mails.
The problem with the iPAQ was that there was no way to delete the e-mails off the server. So I'd download then on the iPAQ, read them and delete them, but then have to read them *again* back on my PC.
The P800 solution is IMHO much the best option for my level of usage - I get around 100-200 e-mails per day.

Actually browser [Opera] may not work in all cases; tried to get to a mate's Hotmail account, but got crap when it tried to redirect to the mail bin. But I think IMAP will do the job? (dunno, I've always had POP3, never bothered with this new-fangled Internet mail thingy 😊 )
