Nokia Maps on Nokia 5800 postcode problem

12 replies · 4,537 views · Started 16 February 2009

Had my 5800 about a week now and very pleased with it too. Started to play with the Nokia maps application today and see it seems to be restricted to only searching for 4 digits in the postcode. This results in wildly innacurate search returns ! Is anyone with a 5800 able to do full postcode searches ? I see this problem existed about a year ago on other nokia devices but I've not discovered if anyone else is reporting the problem with a 5800.

Nokia Maps does not support full postcodes in offline mode. Chances are this is what you have turned on.

If it doesnt ask you at startup,

Options - tools - go online.

Obviously, data charges will apply.

Is this true even if you download the maps to your phone via the Nokia maps downloader on your PC ?

Yes, as it stores many things online no matter what. Try a POI search, both offline and online, and see the difference.

I heard a few people say full postcodes work for them in offline mode, but Im dubious. I have never had one work offline, while the same ones work online.

Perhaps it has a few with the maps that are popular, I don't know.

I tried the postcode search in both online and offline mode, only ever returns first 4 characters of the postcode. I use maps online by default - have a generous data allowance.
Can anyone with a 5800 try a postcode search and see if their search returns values for a full postcode ?

Actually, your dead right. I have the same. And I am most definatly online.

Thats going to be very, very annoying.

It was a crap port anyway, not optimised for the 5800 (it cannot update the screen and do voice at the same time).

A work around is to find postcodes in google maps, and then save it as a favourite.

This then shows up in Maps favourites.

It's a real pain in the rear, but can help if you need it in a pinch.

Thanks for checking - I wondered if it was just me. I read that a year ago there was a similar problem with Nokia maps - I assume it was resolved with an update of the app or some other Nokia based fix. I guess they've created the touch version of Nokia maps from a duff version of the maps app - crikey did they test it before they released it ???
I've emailed Nokia - if I hear anything I'll post - like you say this is very annoying and renders the app on it's own useless for this purpose.

Indeed, I had exactly the same problem when I was testing how good Maps was (frankly, it was shit, as it still is) a year or so ago.

The whole point of Navigation software on the phone is now pointless for me. I wouldn't normally use Nokia Maps anyway, because I feel it's such awful software it should be beta, not charging more than anyone else.

I hope Garmins compatible version comes out soon, or Copilots.

It appears it's not only the hardware side of Nokias quality control needs adjusting.

I think you've just answered my next question - do you know of any other navigation apps that are 5800 / touchscreen UI compatible ? I'd persevere with nokia maps but I'm running out of patience, the routeing is ridiculous, the UI not clear enough and now the postcode issue is the final straw ?
so :
Route 66
TomTom
Copilot
Garmin

is there light at the end of the tunnel ??

You missed one. Extremely pricey for the (lack) of features. 😉

I asked the contacts I have at Garmin, copilot and Tomtom.

Garmin - theres one coming.

Copilot - theres one coming but possibly not for a while (but they do have a stand at the MWC, so Im hoping someone will at least have a lookin for me).

Tomtom - Nothing coming for ANY Nokia device.

I haven't asked Route66, I don't have a contact there. I'll send something off and see what they say.

I haven't asked wayfinder either, but they have just been taken over by Vodafone.

Well, I'm not registered there, but count me in as "me too". Fix please, Nokia; it renders Maps practically useless, and Maps was one of the main reasons for upgrading my wife from an E50 to a 5800 with its much larger screen.

(She's having problems with the "90 days free" too, but that can go in another thread once I've confirmed it)

OK, forget that bit. It was the traffic info she got billed for; the 90 days free drive'n'walk activated just fine. Well, she is blond.
