Now that the excitement of MWC is over, we present another in our series of tutorials for people who are new to the Symbian world: How to update the firmware on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. As always, if you spot a mistake or have a suggestion please do let us know in the comments thread.
Read on in the full article.
Very good article, keep up the good work!
The only bit I slightly disagree with is about buying sim free models to get the latest updates. Almost 2 weeks on nokia still hasn't released the update for the sim free red UK variant 5800xm's on FOTA or NSU.
These are the sim free models that can be found in the official nokia retail stores and online from dealers like play.com and mobile fun.
Hi Unregistered,
Thanks for the praise!
Regarding the SIM-free firmware updates, I have a SIM-free red 5800 and it got the last firmware update as soon as it was released.
I've got the Nordic language version, but as far as I know the UK version should get updates at the same time as the Nordic version. I believe all the other staff of AAS use UK 5800s and they managed to get the latest update, though I'm not 100% sure which procedure they used.
I don't know what problem you might be having, but you might want to call in at your local Nokia repair centre (I think in the UK Nokia's repairs are done by Carphone Warehouse, but check on www.nokia.com/support ). They should be able to update your firmware for free, as your 5800 will still be covered by its 2 year guarantee.
I'll alter the article a bit to tell people to go to the Nokia support site if they have problems.
Ok, I've updated the article, hope this helps. I've also toned down the SIM-free bit to say that unlocked models have the best chance of getting firmware updates first, rather than being absolutely certain that they do, which should cover instances where they don't.
Can we mention Pheonix/NSS on AAS?
UKJeeper, can we leave that out of this comments thread, as the tutorial is meant to be for beginners...? 😊
I'm not sure what the policy is for AAS in general, but to be on the safe side maybe we'd better leave it unmentioned.
I would also like to add that if you are on v11 or v10 and updating to v20, remove the remote locking and reset the lock code to 12345 first. There's a bug in v20 that screw's up the lock code and causes a big head ache.
On a little side note, 5800 sets record by becoming fastest selling handset in india!
over 58,000 units sold in just three weeks!!

Hello
I have a question.
I just upgraded my 5800 to V20.0.012. before the upgrade my phone language was Hebrew, but now I can't find the |Hebrew
I looked for it at phone setting -->phone --> language
but I coudn't find it. please help me.
where did my language go ?
Nonz, if the problem continues, try taking your phone to the nearest Nokia-authorised repair shop as shown on nokia.com/support, they should be able to update it for you to the correct language.
All those with a CPW red 5800 (05755881) with 11.0.008 using the OTA check (*#0000#) will not know that Nokia have released 11.0.009 because it only shows up in NSU, not OTA. Funny that.
009 doesn't seem worth worrying about though, but since I installed 11.0.009 the phone has started complaining about out of date website certificates on certain urls - including OTA update! So it's possibly a security update.
I'm in the same position as the first commenter in this thread - my UK sim-free red 5800, bought on the first day in the Regent Street store, still can't get v20 - and my understanding is that is indeed still unavailable. I'd be interested in hearing, whether anyone with the same model has managed to get it without trekking all the way to a repair store.
BOC
BOC, the firmware really ought to be out there, as I said before most of the staff on AAS are in the UK, using SIM-free UK 5800s, and they did manage to get the update.
If there is some problem with your particular phone, the only thing I can suggest is going to a repair centre and asking for an update, or going back to the shop and asking for a replacement.
Tzer2,
05755881 code 5800xm phones are not showing available firmware beyond 11.0.009 either by FOTA or NSU. Can you check the product codes on the other 5800xm phones that you have available to you?
Unregistered, I'd love to help but I'm in Finland, I don't have access to any of the other AAS 5800s. My 5800 was bought SIM-free here in Finland and I've had no trouble getting updates, but I have no way of checking the situation with British models.
I'd hoped that some of the other AAS staff would comment in this thread so we could get to the bottom of the mystery, but I suspect they're still recovering from MWC...
All I can suggest is getting in touch with Nokia's customer service in the UK, so that they know about any problems people are having, and so they know people want the problem fixed.
Well I can help from anywhere in the world just by using my simple web browser and the Nokia website:
Latest available software for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, product code 0575581
Version: 11.0.009
Compare numbers
If this version is greater than your current software version, update now to get the latest features, applications and improvements. Go to Nokia Software Updater download
So BOC, as you can see there is nothing wrong with your phone, Nokia just haven't got round to it yet.
Well I can help from anywhere in the world just by using my simple web browser and the Nokia website:
I wouldn't rely on the Nokia website, it doesn't always list the latest firmware. It's supposed to, but it doesn't work 100%.
My local repair centre claims that they often have firmware versions that aren't yet available through OTA or NSU, so I'd love to know what UK repair centres to say about this situation.
Tzer2 wrote:I wouldn't rely on the Nokia website, it doesn't always list the latest firmware. It's supposed to, but it doesn't work 100%.
It's the software update website database lookup. I have found it's more reliable than FOTA.
Thanks for the help, Tzer2, but as Unregistered says, there does seem to be something strange.
The tutorials are great, btw - I've found them really useful
BOC
I've been very disappointed with the 5800...
bought mine from the Regent's St store a few weeks ago its running v10. Looking on the NSU website I'm told that there's a v11 firmware for my product code available but neither the NSU software nor the OTA options offer any updates.
I've got loads of Nokia handsets which I keep up to date - this is the main reason I buy my Nokia's direct rather than from an Operator (who only approve a subset of the Nokia firmware releases).
Using the OTA '*#0000# & check for updates' menu tells me that no updates are available, whereas NSU on several PCs tells me the the phone 'is not supported' despite reinstalling the latest NSU & PC suite software from the Nokia's support website.
grrrrrrr....
Exactly the same here. Stuck with V10 firmware, which is definitely a bit buggy.
i'm having trouble updating the firmware as in over the computer the software updater shows v20 update but never fully installs it n stays stuck at the last sec of the update.. When i check for updates using the *#0000# the message i get says there are no updates available... Is there any solution to this, anyones experienced similar problems..
