In the words of Howard Beale, I'm mad at all the MWC coverage and I've had enough. With Rafe still replacing fluids via the healing power of Lucozade, and Steve off to help ailing family and leaving me the keys to the CMS for the weekend, I might just let off a little humorous steam about the pointlessness of the Mobile World Congress.

Well said, Ewan:icon14:... "Nothing new at all from the MWC. Phones with a slightly bigger number on each line of the specification lists, and even then you'll have to wait months to see them"!
Even though you're so right, I'm still convinced the E55 will make me happier. 😉
Such a cynic Ewan!
Of course this is essentially true. These days we are seeing evolutionary changes rather than revolutionary.
One of the consequences of this evolution is that you don't really notice the changes until they happen. If I look back 5 years to the first 3GSM I attended then things have changed a lot - the idea of the open software platform is accepted, convergence is writ large across nearly all phone hardware, software, content and services have become very much more important and perhaps most notably of all the industry (and most others) now accept that mobile is the back bone of future technology.
Really the thing about MWC is that everybody is in one place at one time and a lot of announcements get made. And yes like any trade show it's about business to business and the meetings that take place. The smoke and mirrors of major press events just makes everyone look at the shiny toys.
Much more from em in the next few weeks!
It's a trade show not a consumer show, just somewhere to spend those expenses and network with other companies.
The main argument about availability of products is void because these companies are talking to the networks not Joe public. The way a consumer launch should work is total silence before launch, build expectation, invite your fan base , reveal the wow product then state it's available today in the stores. If I could only remember the name of this company 😊 They Might not have a long spec list but they do have excellent marketing.
I thought the Omnia HD was big news.
Previously unannounced.
Limited leaked info.
Switch of OS for Flagship Product.
Availabe in next couple of months.

Exactly, MWC is supposed to be a business-to-business event rather than a consumer showcase.
The main reason for companies hyping their product plans so far in advance is to reassure shareholders and business partners that a company's future is bright, that there are potential big-selling products in the pipeline.

If you're talking about Apple, that only applies to Americans. Everyone else has to wait months for Apple products to appear in the shops after the initial announcement.
It works both ways though, the Americans have to wait for Nokias etc 😊

EVERYONE has to wait for Nokias... 😉
That reminds me, apparently the E75 is due to be in the shops at the end of March, but the E55 won't be available until July at the earliest.
I'm mad as Hell at people getting famous movie quotes wrong, and I cannot take it anymore!
Well said Rafe.
This was more of evolutionary prowess rather than revolutionary. However, One product which was path breaking for me was Samsung's Blue Earth. Now thats not very high on specs, but atleast samsung came out with something absolutely green.
This was amazing and I believe its gonna set the tone for future.
8, 10, 12 MP was all rubbish to me. Anything over 5MP is not going to make significant changes to your pic and only going to add up to your data.
Imagine this, I am on EDGE as India still has not opened up to 3G and it takes me 3-4 minutes to upload one pic taken from my N82 thru Shozu to Facebook. Am I going to wait till eternity then to upload an 8MP pic? No way.
E55 again was good. Nokia trying their hands on tweaked SureType. 😉

What are you going to do about it, then? Or was this it? 😉
Normally, I'd agree with you. However, I think from mid 2008 to mid 2009, there has been a little revolution on the smart phone markets. On pretty much all the little specification numbers.
Let's skip that everyone has gone touchscreen this year, that's just a trend. However, there's a few noticable points that has happened the last half year:
- Lowend smart phones has gone considerably cheaper. The cheapest one I am looking at now is about half the price of the cheapest one a year ago. And it can do more at that price.
- Wi-Fi and A2DP has exploded. Hardly any new smartphones lack these two important features any more. Without those, a smartphone is half way to pointless.
- 800 x 480. After the HTC Touch HD, everyone is doing it. This is the resolution where your phone actually can be used to read stuff. It's an excellent improvement from half a year ago.
And now we're also looking at the first three or so symbian phones with touch screen. Well, I can hold my enthusiasm, but I will say that my next smart phone will be a whole lot better suited for doing the things I want to do, than my current one. There is a lot of progress displayed on this years MWC, and most of the things I feel restricts my usage of my current phone, wil be erased from the 2009 models.
It's a good year.
