The Samsung Omnia HD under the microscope

You'll forgive me appearing to be sucking up to the 'boss', but Rafe has done an exemplary job with his photography at this year's Mobile World Congress. Witness the first of his in depth photo galleries, this time featuring the highest specification phone any of us is likely to hold in 2009, the Samsung Omnia HD, running S60 5th Edition. Rafe takes us over the device in gory detail, so enjoy!

Read on in the full article.

I will buy this phone sim free, so I will start saving now as this will command a hefty price tag.

It will be the First time I buy a non nokia symbian handset. Nokia 7650, Nokia 6600, Nokia N70, Nokia N73, Nokia N82 and now Samsung Omnia HD.

Does anyone know when this is likely to go on sale?

I just hope Samsung get their ass in gear with Firmware updates, bug fixes!

Could you also post some camera quality comparisons (also in low-light without flash to see the noise) with the N95 and some newer model?

Menneisyys - We'll try to do this when we have some longer hands on time.

We'll be doing a mre detail text / video preview shortly.

Yeah, I think a lot of people will be trying out non-Nokia Symbian because of this model.

Hopefully Samsung will give Nokia a lot of competition in the Symbian field, that would be really good for the platform, and of course good for the end users too.

If people can change manufacturer brands without changing OS, that will make the Symbian world a lot more competitive.

IF Nokia doesn't come out with a new Commie by the autumn, and IF Samsung gets S60 apps to work properly, this will be my new phone.

However, my contract's not up until September, and thats a loong way away...😉

No worries. I was quite busy too. Spotted you on the SF stand at one point but I was busy talking to some punters at the time so couldn't say hi.

<off-topic>Btw, what do you think of the new foundation branding?</off-topic>

This phone looks very impressive next to the n97, in fact on raw spec in beats it in a number of areas- screen/size, camera, video, type of touchscreen etc. But i have learnt my lesson in the past. My last phone was the n95 8gb an i wanted a upgrade, to stay with nokia would mean a n96 which to me wasnt that much of a upgarde, in fact some say its a downgrade!. Then samsung released the innov8 which seemed like a true upgrade so i went with that. Believe me when i say i have never experienced so much issues with a phone in my life- very poor battery life, very bad signal, no updates, so many bugs, no apps, freezes, an on an on.. I looked through so many forums and almost everyone was having the same problem. I Swapped it for the 5800 when it came out and im happy again, nice stable firmware, everything working and boy did i miss nokia maps, music store and the rest

Ahahahah.
You are really a nokia fan and not a cellphone user.
I swapped from innov8 to 5800 and i'm crying!!! I just did it becouse i like to change and i dont buy a mobilphone reading it's brand, but reading it's performance\features\design also.
The 5800 is just nice but has a lot of bug, it's the 3rd firmware i upgrade in 2 month and still buggish, headset problems, the touch after 2 months become instable and not so sensible like the beginning, the screen is very very bad under the sun light almost unreadable , putting apps on it make it so slow and wich apps do you need on a mobilephone a part a navigator and 2 or 3 other stupid things??? Photo are so shitty and video also with that strange and ebrassing format respect the Innov8. so please, dont talk bullshits, INNOV8 is 100 times better than this shit that' i'm selling right now on EBAY. Buy mobilphone for theyr usability and not for theyr brand!!

Ah if you want one, take my one on Ebay search in Italy i'm maxdatfrede on ebay (sorry cant post link 😉!

Getting back the innov8 atm and waiting for this OmniaHD. Nokia plastic materials also is annoying me a lot.

So u trying to tell me the innov8 battery is better than the 5800's?, route 66 is better than nokia maps?, etc, an at least u had 2 updates with the 5800 it shows nokia are trying, i didnt have none on the innov8 had it for over 5 months an that was suppose to be samsungs flagship!. And at least u could put apps on the 5800 couldnt find any to work on the innov8 an i do like my apps. Performance/features/ and design are usually the same in brands - nokia mostly use plastic and the phones look alike ( dual sliders). samsung use really thin designs and have metallic feels etc. Any smartphone user usually knows what to expect from a brand. I do favour nokia cause they have the best balance between services/solutions, updates, performace, ease of use, features and most of all reliability. The innov8 is obviously better dnt get me wrong, but it falls very short on some of the things i jus said. Oh an try using the innov8 in sunlight my friend, it can actually be used as a mirror lol
