Help again
I use a laptop most of the time, it hasnt got serial ports and the usb serial adaptor crashes my system (XP). Theres no IR on the laptop either.
What are my options, is there a USB cable available, or a usb IR adaptor at a sensible price ?
Any thoughts welcome
Thanks
Steve

Try a google search " USB IR " it returns about 15 different devices available.

Out of curiosity what sort of lap top is it with no comms ports ?

Hiya

Its a Sony GR214mp

Just usb, firewire, printer and monitor outputs. I didnt choose it, my F series died and the insurance replaced it with this one, a lot better computer till i needed the serial. Wonder if i can get a printer to serial adaptor ? hmm

Can the IR be used as a proper connection ? It wasnt that way with Psion, they had to use the cable.

Thanks

Wonderfull

I think I will do that, a full IR connection would be great...

Will have a go when i can get a decent IR port from somewhere... I wonder if i can extract the one in my semi dead Little Sony PCG-C1F laptop to put in my new laptop... Hmmm, an electonics project becons i think

Thanks

For anyone interested
I got my Nokia to talk to the laptop via the serial port with a usb serial adaptor. The only one i could get to work with the psion was an unbranded one that is a simple usb cable about 8 " long with a usb plug on one end and a 9 pin serial on the other. If you looking for one don't get the white block one, with a seperate usb lead and a 25pin serial, it wont work.. I dont know what the actual difference is with them as they both look identical in software but at least this one works, and it only cost me 17 User posted image

No problem Barbara

I got mine from a computer fair - but i do know that they sell them at maplins too...

try www.maplins.co.uk if there isnt one near you...

There are two types tho, a white one about 2" x 2" x .5" with a 25 pin socket and a 25 to 9 adaptor. This is in my experience not the best choice, the alternate type which is a usb cable with a 9 pin socket moulded into the other end seems much more reliable....

Its packed on a flat card with bubble plastic over it, the cable in an inverted U shape.

However... both cables crash my XP Pro system quite regularly, and predictably - usually when trying to sync with my outlook phone book....

They should be more reliable with other Windows OS versions though

Expect to pay in the region of 30 from a mapins store or similar, or about 17 from a computer fair.....

Hope this helos

I have a laptop without serial ports, only USB.Went out and got myself a serial to USB connector cost US$20.00. Hook it up and pray. Unfortunately my laptop has Windows XP and the damn thing crashes my system until I wanted to throw my 9210 away. Such a pain!!!

Anyone has got any idea for me??

My Home PC with Windows 98 and a serial connector connects beautifully.

My expirience with laptops was good they all connected with ir without any problem, but then, I tried an xp laptop, no go.

Ir works fine but not on xp, even heard a lot of complaints of people using the normal serial cable on xp.

I was thinking of getting me a universal mmc reader for usb, that way I could connect to every pc and transfer files much faster.

From what I've heard there is (or will be) a new version of PC Suite for the 9210i - this works with the 9210 and is more stable in XP - might be worth a search on Nokia.com for more info.

One suggestion (which I use) is to dispense with the Nokia PC Suite altogether.

I can transfer individual files using Win98 (SE)'s Send To InfraRed recipient. Sending back to the PC from the 9210 is just a matter of reversing the process on the PC, and then Send via IR in the File Manager file menu on the 9210.

Full backups are achieved by zipping up what's needed via ZipManager and IR'ing the zip file.

I don't need desktop sync (I have the 9210 with me all the time, I don't have my hulking PC).

In terms of Emails, I can use PsiNT Extended Internet to send emails (saving on phone bills) and can direct download files via Web from a local IP mapped directory onthe ahrd drive.

Oh and I use the Greenwich Instruments GirBIL for the IR port via serial, but there is a USB version as well www.expansys.com.
