The Nokia 5800 and N97 are now supported by Ovi Sync

Hot off the press, Ovi just added support for S60 5th Edition phones such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and N97. Each can now be added in the 'Manage your device' section and, crucially, you can now sync your Calendar, Contacts, To-dos and Notes to Ovi. For 5800 owners like me who have felt a little uneasy about the lack of OTA backup, then this is very welcome. Screen grab proof below.

Read on in the full article.

...Erm..you always could sync with Ovi. You just need to choose a different S60 device from that list. I've been syncing since November. :con?

I've had a lot of problems syncing to Ovi using my 6220 classis - calendar is fine but contacts is broken for me. It appears to sync fine, but not all the fields sync properly - some contacts lose phone numbers, addresses etc. This means I can't rely on it for a backup. Would be interested to know if other people (and other S60 phones) have the same issue.

Yes, I know you could always fake it. But this is official and (presumably) tested/ratified for S60 5th Edition. Anyway, I'd been waiting to pounce on this for weeks and it's finally up. So. There. 8-)

Yup. Same issue. I would not rely on it. In short, I find it lacking and not very reliable.

Received the text, entered the pin, saved the text.

Next, it says, go to sync and choose Ovi from options.

No Ovi in sync options, in fact no Ovi anywhere.

It's shyte.

Within 'Sync', you have to use 'Options - Change active sync profile'.

Not very intuitive though, I much preferred the old fashioned way Sync worked 8-(

Yep, same on my E51. Some fields are missing. I have tried everything possible and there's no way to come around this problem. Unusable at the moment.

From a combination of AAS user help I got it working, thanks.

Absolutely nothing like the way Nokia suggest it's done when you sign up.

even after u go and choose cahnge active profile and then ovi.com, syncing is still an issue.
says remote server not defined... giving up syncing for now
i wish hardware guys like nokia, pay more attention to the software part... how else will they dream of being anywhere near APPLE?

Managed to get it to sync my Contacts using Ovi sync, but it will not do my Notes. Keeps coming up with Invalid database or something.

Is there any way you could do one of your great ttorials on setting this up because, although I'm still trying, I just can't seem to get it to work.

I finally got it. It took me about three rounds of deleting my device from OVI and deleting profiles. Here is what I went through in all my cluelessness, maybe it will help someone else.

First, when it saves the SMS, after you put in the code, it automatically creates the sync profile for you. That's what I thought it was supposed to do but, for some reason probably having to do with the drugs they take in Finland, they hide the profile from you. Yup, they don't give you a list of sync profiles, they only show you the profile that's active, leaving one to possibly believe it is the only one.

So when I try everything I can think of and fail to find a way to sync, I figure I must have done something wrong on one of the steps. So I remove my device from OVI and start from scratch. This time I'm reeeeealy careful about following each step properly. I get the SMS, enter code, save. I check again. Again no sync profile (or so I think)-- I appear to only have the PC Suite profile. So, I figure, I must need to create the profile, which made no sense but... So I created the profile, put in a lot of information which I had no idea how to answer (when it asked for the name of the contacts database on the server, I put "contacts" :rolleyes😊. Ten it asked me for the name of the server on the web and I put ovi.com and it came back and said "there is already a profile for Ovi.com.

Oooookay.

So I try "switch active profile" on the sync menu and there it is, a profile called ovi.com. Yes, I do feel foolish, but why would you switch profile if no information you had gave you a clue you had more than one profile. However, I'm happy, I figure I'm in business. I pick sync off the menu and it goes to connect and... fails to connect.

Now what. Now I'm thinking, somehow doing stuff twice created a problem (turns out I was wrong, but at this point I'm a little flustered). So I figure, now that I found the profile and know that it actually is created, lets really start from scratch. I delete the profile, delete my unlock SMSes and remove my device from my Ovi account. I even put on a couple of Nightwish tracks for good luck. I add my device, get the SMS, enter code, save, go to sync, switch profiles, yes there it is, connect and... connection failed.

Umm, ok, this was more my fault, but only because the software was being lame. I went and connected to wifi and then did it, and the sync worked. Is it really too much for a function that connects to the internet to, like, open a connection? 🙄

I'm slow sometimes, but this should not be this hard.

We'll add it to the list!

Thanks.

Of course, I did miss THIS which had all but the info about finding the sync profile.

Then there is THIS problem, which happened to me right off. Anyone found a solution for the missing data from contacts problem yet? 🙄
