Route 66

Sorry if there's a few threads going round on this topic, but i didn't want to hijack anyone elses.

Havn't really used GPS before on phones, was wondering if everytime you connect to get your location and use the sat-nav, you get charged? Or do you just pay a one off fee for maps and then whenever you use sat-nav it doesn't charge?

Thanks for the replies..

Depends on the program and features you use.

Nokia Maps - dont bother, always needs data (you can put it to offline mode, but it will not find diddly squat if you do).

Copilot 7 - Can work without data connection happily, though you need data if you want to use tracking etc.

Garmin XT - same as Copilot.

Route66 - same as Garmin, copilot.

Theres a few others too, but I wouldn't recommend them.

Theres also the AGPS data as well, which is nothing to do with the software. Bascially, leave it on - get a lock MUCH quicker, and a very small data amount (4-7kb each time you start a GPS program up yet).

Or turn it off and have no data sent, but a longer time getting a lock.

Please note, I am not sure about Copilot or Nokia Maps on the Samsung, although I know the others work.

Hmm.. Well i'm using the route 66 program that comes pre-installed on the i8510.

I got some of your post. Does it mean therefore that if i was to use the program, i could use the GPS, but if i wanted to get from A to B and use it like a tomtom i would have to connect it, which would mean data being sent = paying for it by connecting to web?

No, it will not use any data. You should check the extra features, like traffic data, weather etc (not sure what R66 has these days, haven't used it for a while).

There are usually extra functions that will use data if they are turned on.

So make sure these are turned off, and you will be fine, even with navigation.

For AGPS (which is seperate from Route66), do a search on the forum.

However I recommend turning it on, your lock time is much quicker.

Unless you are on a very very bad contract, it will only use a few pence worth of data each time you start up a GPS program, and only at the start.
