This phone I heared is coming up on AT&T next month, April.
I have an unlock E71 and would want any update that would come along with AT&T's version.
These are my wishlist:
1. E-mail capable of displaying HTML content right off the page. I'm sure if you want to have HTML email, then you should go away with that stock background image and make it plain white color. I'm referring to the Nokia Messaging client which is the only one I can use to push email from our company email server to my handset. The native email client will not 'auto-sync' with our server even if I'm using Mail for Exchange.
(the standard/native email client allows HTML attachment though, but I still would rather see everything in one page, wouldn't you?)
2. There is no way to manually purge the Trash folder (please correct me if there is a way) in the Nokia Messaging.
3. It's weird having two email clients in one device just to get push email, why not let go of the native one.
4. The trademark Nokia typeface/font in Nokia Messaging is not appealing anymore. It is very dot-matrix to my taste, hard to read emails with thin typefaces. Could they at least make that thicker. I now use Nokia Messaging as push notifier and use Gmail client to read and reply because the typefaces is noticeably bigger in Gmail's own. I don't use the built-in email client.
I'm really concerned with No. 1. I don't understand where Nokia is going here. The iPhone and BlackBerry have these features and very well supported (I've had the iPhone, Curve, and Storm). From what I read in blogs is that Nokia deliberately skipped this feature for countries where data plan is expensive and billed by amount of data used. Well, we pay flat rate in the states on AT&T, shouldn't we be maximizing that data plan?
What is your wishlist?
Thanks for sharing.
Although I thought I would miss HTML email, as it happens, I don't. Some emails arrive as HTML and I must open them in the browser or click the "if this email isn't readable click here." But the majority of messages arrive as plain text and that works for me. Now, there's a chicken and egg scenario here, because all of my smartphones in the past have worked better with plain text so given a choice between HTML or text, I've always picked text. 😉
The vanilla email client can work in push mode with Gmail - set the update frequency to be 30 minutes (or less, maybe) and it takes care of things. But, yes, the standard email client isn't brilliant. I would really really like it to download message bodies rather than just the headers with using an account over IMAP.
Really, I'd like PalmOS' Chatteremail+ ported to S60 but that probably isn't going to happen!
As for the font... well it works for me so far. I use the device in "small font" mode so perhaps that makes a difference. I also am fussy with my themes so that I can see things clearly.
I would like to see some user interface upgrades, though. For example, sometimes you have a long list of items and it would be great to put that keyboard to use - press t and it brings up the first entry in the list that starts with the letter t. I've bought Cute Keys, which allows me two-key access to lots of applications. Hotkeys is something I'd have liked the E71 to do as standard... decent sized QWERTY keyboard, lets use it for something.
Aside from the weakness in the email department (for me, the inability to download bodies automatically), the E71 has a great blend of looks*, the stability, the performance and battery life. I like it!
*looks are subjective ad the metal case does get covered in fingerprints, but it looks both smart and professional without being too bling! bling!
I basically want to have both features of the native email and Nokia Messaging client combined into one, of course with HTML.
In the native app, the auto-notify and retrieval will not work together unless one is disabled. Why not let them work together?:frown:
The native app allows HTML though, but as an attachment, and will direct you to the browser in order to view it. The Blackberry have the same protocol but when downloaded, the HTML will show in the email body, so you still view everything in one page.
It's probably me, but I think the stock background in the native email app and Nokia Messaging client is annoying, given the fact that the typeface in the latter is already thin.
So why not combined all features in both clients into one.
Oh, and if you select exit on both the native app and the Nokia Messaging, you get disconnected and loose push notification. I mean, it is alright to exit apps and let them run in the background.
Let's see what kind of update will come up on AT&T's version of the Nokia E71. And I hope they are available to unlock version.😊
Don't get me started with auto-notify and auto-retrieve, as they're both silly confusing. Effectively on my set up, auto-retrieve is as good as auto-notify because it only pulls down the headers. 😡
I remember handling HTML files on my BlackBerry devices, which is a factor in subscribing to text email services! I forget how well Chatteremail+ handled HTML. I think it used to punt me across to the web browser.
Also - the email application on my E71-1 warns you that you'll disconnect from any connected accounts if you go to close the application. Plus if it's doing its auto-connect thing, it'll reconnect at the next interval. For me that's up to half an hour away, which is no big deal but I appreciate that your mileage may vary!
