Planes, Trains and the Nokia 5800 - Ewan across the USA - part 5

Yes, Ewan's heading off (Twitter feed here) for a three week tour of the USA, taking in social media and gaming events. To try and add a little Symbian spice to proceedings, we insisted he take the Nokia 5800 with him, to really try it out 'on the road'. This is the fifth of his regular video reports, embedded below, letting us know how he's getting on with S60 5th Edition and the 5800. Ewan talks about PIM apps (Contacts, Calendar, and so on), touching on Sync options and having a good rant about the paucity of Nokia's S60 To-do list functions.

Read on in the full article.

Just to note that all of Ewan's videos are being shot on the Nokia N95 8GB....

(Thought someone would be curious, anyway.....)

I appreciate your effort bringing all this information to us all and maybe its just me but I find it quite difficult understanding most of what you say. I am sure its not the accent, maybe you speak too fast for me.....

I disagree with the assessment that the Contacts app is just fine the way it is. It should be, IMHO, more integrated with other system apps. Specifically, I would like that, if I enter an address for one of my contacts, that address becomes also available in Nokia Maps. Instead, not only I have to enter the address separately in Maps, but, to be able to call that contact directly from Maps, I have to add a phone number to that position entry.
A similar thing for birthdays. Once I enter the birthday of one of my contacts, I would like to be given the option to add that as a yearly recurrence in Calendar. Instead, again, I have to enter that information twice.
I haven't tried Ovi Contacts yet - previous bad experiences with some Nokia's too-much-beta betas have scarred me for life, and, besides, it's not available for the 5800 - maybe it finally fixes this lack of integration.

I really appreciate this series of videos, but I believe that this particular one is not focused on the 5800. Almost all of the commentary is directed towards S60's implementation of a PIM suite and its integration with OVI. However, those comments are true of most (if not all) of the s60 3rd edition suite of phones.

What I was expecting were comments directed towards how usable the PIM apps were on the 5800. How fast is it to find a contact and dial, send an email, etc. How did Nokia take advantage of the touch interface to make using the PIM suite better? How does the touch interface developed by Nokia make using the PIM suite worse?

That being said, I agree that the most glaring (IMHO) problem with the S60 pim suite is the lack of categories. This situation is abysmal and has been complained about for years without a response from the S60 developers even though they have issued 2 feature packs!

Thanks again for this insightful series.

He does seem to like noisy spots doesn't he? But I have to agree with him. The PIM apps have stayed pretty much the same over the years. I think they were actually better on the Psion than they are now.

Does anyone know if Ovi allows category support on the server?

I have been able to use categories on my N95 by using SBSH Calendar (formerly known as Papyrus) in conjuction with OTA Sync.
