Yes, Ewan's heading off (Twitter feed here) for a three week tour of the USA, taking in social media and gaming events. To try and add a little Symbian spice to proceedings, we insisted he take the Nokia 5800 with him, to really try it out 'on the road'. This is the sixth of his regular video reports, embedded below, letting us know how he's getting on with S60 5th Edition and the 5800. In this part, Ewan answers some feedback questions and talks more about the PIM apps with regard to touch integration, before describing why Nokia Maps is a better bet than Google Maps for the overseas traveller. Oh, and watch out for the battlestar-sized stylus and the Black Helicopter....

Thanks, Ewan. This is so much better! A more quiet setting and you're speaking more slowly. 😊
Question: Since you are using only this device, can we see how easily you are coping with the onscreen keyboard? How fast can you type out an SMS or email? How does it compare with the iPhone (if you have used it before?
Safe travels!
It should be mentioned that for maps there's also Garmin Mobile XT, which has been recently updated for the 5800. Garmin XT has the same interface as their standalone GPS units (Nuvi), which turns out to be absolutely great on touchscreen phones like the 5800. And it works in landscape mode, a big Nokia Maps pet peeve of mine.
Ewan, are you making these videos with your N95? The quality looks pretty poor compared to what I remember my N95 to be capable of... It looks like the lens is dirty or scratched, putting a "halo" on everything! Is this possible?
As I pointed out to Steve in one of his camera articles, some N95s (the lens cover-less NAM and 8 GB versions) have some sort of anti-glare coating on the glass lens that is relatively easy to scratch and that over time, produces this kind of "halo".
Polishing the coating off the glass lens (using an automotive paint polish) appears to restore picture quality to normal once and for all, simply requiring a quick wipe of the glass lens with a soft clean cloth before use.
are you really actually using a pen on a touch screen?
