Group Review: Cases for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

In a group review Steve rounds up a number of cases and protection solutions for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. He gives scores for protection, style and usability and assesses how well each case does in each scoring category. He concludes by offering an overall opinion, but our prior experience suggests people have strong personal preferences so we would love to hear from you too.

I recently bought a Beyza case, and I'm very happy with it. Pouch-style, quality leather, and most importantly: designed for the 5800. It offers more protection than the Nokia one, allowing me to keep keys and phone in the same jeans pocket without worrying about scratches (at least on the phone; on the case, already a few minor ones- but that's what cases are for!). And, since it's not a generic, it doesn't take more space than it should.

I really don't get these cases. They add weight, bulk and obstruct the use of a phone that already has a perfectly good hard case around its electronics. Some poor design guy at Nokia has got his pride and joy on to the market only for people to hide it inside ugly leather pouches that look like they are made of bovine scrotal tissue. Why would I want to fiddle about opening one of these pouches every time I reach for the phone?

Hey,

Great review of the cases BUT you forget one important case that a lot of people use (including me)!

That is a standard Silicon Case the ones you find abundantly on eBay/amazon etc.

Hope you add that to your article,

Thanks in advance

It amazes me that Krussell maintain their reputation, never mind stay in business. Sure, their generic 'pouch' cases are OK but that's simply because the pouch is the easiest cut and sew design to produce.

Their other two cases just remind me of the Nokia 6600 and my recent two N95 8Gb cases I had from them - bulging at the seems, ill-fitting cut outs and nasty plastic that deforms and tears eventually.

The Proporta case is similar to the PDair case I'm currently using for my N95. Granted the clip on is huge and ungainly - which is why I dispensed with it and use a lanyard tethered to the phone itself.

That cases model in the picture is the most common of all, but not the most loved one. At least, I don't think a girl would want to use it to protect its 5800, it's very a "strong" and "McGyver" cases model.
Plus, the design is not that good, like I said, it looks ugly.

Nokia has much better cases than that one, or the models from Beyzacases, for example, it looks much more stylish and it has the same build quality.

I have to agree with most here. Those cases, minus the Nokia case look simply awful. While the Nokia case may not let you operate the screen, I have been able to adjust the volume through the case with the side volume switch. To date, I have no scratches on my 5800XM.

I must admit im in the 'why bother' camp.
A mobile device should be able to survive without any additional wrapping.

I limit myself to just using a screen protector, as plastic screens do scratch, but
even these become annoying.

You forget to mention one great manufacturer: NOREVE in France. Their high quality leather case fits perfectly the 5800...

To the Admins:

The forums copyright notice has 2000- 2009, but the general lastest news section has 2000 -2006..

I personally use an ipod sock, it fits the 5800 perfectly, it's light weight and isn't bulky. I happened to have a spare one, but they can be picked up quite cheaply (especially the non brand ones)
