Planes, Trains and the Nokia 5800 - Ewan across the USA - part 7

Yes, Ewan's heading off for a three week tour of the USA, taking in social media and gaming events. To try and add a little Symbian spice to proceedings, we insisted he take the Nokia 5800 with him, to really try it out 'on the road'. This is the seventh of his regular video reports, embedded below, letting us know how he's getting on with S60 5th Edition and the 5800. In this part, Ewan looks at the phone's camera, from the point of view of still photos and video, finding that it really struggles indoors and in low light, plus he finds the Camera application's interface less than seamless.

Hi Ewan,

Are you completely convinced that issue with the 5800 Camera is a hardware one .

Are there any chances that some of these issues can be corrected through with a new software version ( Firmware upgrade)???

Also I find the S60 5th edition more like an old wine in a new bottle. Its like even though the interface is touch you end up doing the same things like the 3rd edition. Absolutely no emphasis on gestures that come with touch. Very Sad.

Kind Regards,

Hi! Great Video Diary.. Could you guys please mention about the Battery Life of the Nokia 5800?

What's the average time after a day of 30 minute Voice calls, a couple of hours of Web Browsing, about 100 SMS, and 2-3 hours of Music playing? Does it survive a day? Or do we need to carry an Extra Battery during travelling?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ewan! Enjoy the vids on the 5800. Was hoping maybe you could help me decide on which ph I should choose. I currently own a Nokia N95 8GB and do enjoy it a great deal. But lately I have been interested in a touch screen ph. I have read good and bad reviews about the 5800. One of the advantages I see in the 5800 is the screen resolution. Good for pics and videos I would imagine. Is the 5800 laggy? How is the UI compared to the ubiquitous iPhone? Which of the two would you choose for everyday use? Thanks in advance for your input. -tank-

In some way the 5800 is Nokia saying: "This what we are working on. It's not an N-series or an E-series so it's not quite there yet."

under 200.00 sim free ? lowest i'm seeing it is 249.99 at play, can anyone point me towards
a 200.00 sim free 5800 ? ( not fleabay )

I suspect Ewan saw the ex-VAT price...... so yes, take that with a pinch of salt. But I'd bet that this will be 'under 200' *including* VAT before too long, so he'll be right one day.....!

[Buying these for your business, of course, means that you effectively don't pay the VAT part]

In my last Phones Show, I talked about the 5800 being 'just over' 200. I suppose it depends how much you shop around and what your definition of 'just over' is? 8-)

Perhaps, but this is the message I got from it:

"This is what we're good at. We sell more phones than anyone else because we provide good value for money."

The 5800 might not be the sexiest phone ever made, but it's IMHO better value for money than any other phone at the moment. It ticks virtually every box, not just with its large touchscreen but also mundane stuff like long battery life and good durability.

The 5800 is such good value that it's difficult to see why people would buy any other current Nokia S60 models, except perhaps for a better camera or a physical QWERTY keyboard. Apps I suppose would also be another weak point of the 5800, but that's to be expected when a new software platform launches, and Ovi Store should kickstart S60v5 development very soon.

Agree with this, as a 5800 owner who as own a N95, a 6600 and nokia 770.
