Bargain of the decade? The Nokia N82 now officially only 199

Nokia is apparently clearing down stocks of its older smartphones - in this case what I'd call 'classic' smartphones - the still awesome N82 (in black or silver) is in the Nokia UK shop at the bargain price of £199 including VAT (sales tax), SIM/contract-free and unlocked. Staggering. Grab them while you can. Xenon flash, candy bar form factor, accelerated graphics, you know you want to....

Read on in the full article.

That is pretty good value, especially when you consider how weak the pound is.

In Euro countries you'd expect to pay literally twice as much for the same phone.

Arcade, only if you know someone in the UK. Nokia shops only deliver to the country they're based in.

Its a real good price, for the best phone from Nokia, on my opinion, to date. Maybe its time to buy a Spare🙄

It's not a very special price really, unlocked, unused and unwanted upgrades have been going on Ebay for a bit more than half this price.

The N82 is available as the article points out for 199.00. Also, the N78, which comes with Feature Pack 2, is also available for 199.00. And the outstanding E51 is merely just over 150! Nothing on the market can stand up to these on features, etc, whilst they are selling at these prices. It might be worth noting also, that over the next few years significant bargains will be had as a result of the overall transition in many market segments towards touch screen, meaning that keypad based smartphones like these will turn out to be phenomenally affordable.

While it's certainly a good deal and hope it will reach Sweden, I also find it a bit depressing. The N82 is old now, a bargin bin device, yet it's still the only N-series device with a xenon flash. I would have expected that the demand for xenon flash is at least larger than that, but appearantly not.

Would love to see a new N-series candybar with xenon flash, with the latest tech and 2-3mm thinner and a more comfortable keypad.

Used ones might be around the 100 pound mark, don't think you'd get a brand new one for anywhere near that tho (certainly not one that's under a 2 year guarantee like you get from retail phones).

Having said that, Nokia selling it for 199 could drive the price down. Who is going to pay 200 on ebay when they can get it cheaper straight from Nokia?

In Euro countries you'd expect to pay literally twice as much for the same phone.

Here in Italy the N82 sells for about 290, including 20% VAT. Not only it is not literally twice, it's not even close to being twice, despite the higher VAT. Still, 199 is a very good deal.

...and the brand new unlocked 2-year guaranteed N85 is 335 quid inc VAT on nokia.co.uk. Good luck to all those eBay sellers trying to flog 'em for 350 quid!

Jonathan Pritchard:

Makes me sad that I bought my Black N82 on ebay, almost new for a similiar price to that SIM free model.

The demand is high, but apparently Nokia are not willing to supply more phones with Xenon. Search the forums, you will find loads and loads of ppl demanding such a flash.

Xenon is best left to dedicated cameras. It uses a lot of battery to charge the capacitor. The capacitor uses a lot of space increasing phone size. It's expensive to manufacture compared to LEDs, and it is much less green in both manufacture and disposal. It requires the generation of high trigger voltages inside the phone leading to more manufacturing difficulites. It's also less reliable.

It's a big compromise to just slightly improve a compromised phone camera with a cheap sensor and a poor lens, in certain conditions and lighting. I'm happy to stick with LEDs. Perhaps a slave unit add on for those few that need it would be a better way to go.

im not so sure, its a brick, its keypad (or lack thereof) sucks, and im not about to sacrifice all this for xenon flash.

I really dissapoint about bad N82 keyboard... As a N95 ex-user, i think i'm really 1000 times better satisfied with N82, the Slider is very annonying...

I'll don't buy an N86 or other Slider because is the same worse as N95, even N95 owners don't see sustancial differences with N85/N86

Wait for N97, that is a real true phone, but i want a Symbian v5 Xenon phone in next year 😉

Also, i think N82 keyboard more comfortable than my older N95 😉

Thanks for the reminder Steve I had noticed this and had forgotten. I now have a shiny white N82, and I really like it. Once you get used to the somewhat eccentric keyboard I agreed its a great phone, I always loved the camera on my N95 (sold it) and I think I'll enjoy using this one as well. Now I have three Nokia phones to synch with my PC.... damn!
