The Samsung Omnia HD Preview - Part 2 - Camera and Multimedia

Rafe continues his in depth preview of the OLED-screened, touch-driven, S60 5th Edition-powered Samsung Omnia HD. In this, part 2, he looks at the multimedia capabilities of the phone. In part 1, he covered the general design and hardware. Part 3, coming soon, will cover the other software elements of the phone.

Read on in the full article.

Nice read, I'm really looking forward to being able to just copy divx etc onto the phone and (for the most part) be able to watch it. Its been something I've craved for some time, and to get it with a gorgeous 3.7 OLED screen is just so much the sweeter... Roll on the release date!

But not until they shrink it to the size and weight of the Nokia 5800 (or slimmer)

I wish Samsung would license the Multimedia Transfer software from Nokia that allows you to move your itunes library from your Mac to your Nokia phone. Speaking as a Mac owner Samsung don't have a clue when it comes to providing Mac compatible software to support their S60 devices.

And what about sound's quality of videos ? will they inprove it ?
Is there a slow motion capture mode ? what resolution ?
What is WDR fonction ?
If someone know 😃
Thanks !

Will the Audio Quality using headphones
(i use Ultimate Ears, cost me 115!)
sound better than my existing Nokia N91 8GB?
i havent found ANY Mobile that touches it for sheer audio quality listening to MP3`s

is there a vague release date? im due for an Upgrade in June this year on the 02 Network

Hi!
What did you mean by, "Playing back video recorded on the Omnia HD on an HD TV (directly not via DLNA)."? You mean there's an alternative to DLNA? is it also wireless?

Now available for pre-order on Play with a release date of the 25/05/09.

Link.

Watching the sample 720p video you got on there, the lipsync isnt just bad. Its miles out!!

Is this Quicktimes fault or similar to the lipsync bug on the i8510, just much worse?

Some of the Samsung's have very good audio performance. I have a G810 now, that I've used with studio grade Sony's, and I'm very impressed by it. I have some Nokia WH-700's that I use for day-to-day and it still sounds damn good with those.

I was so dead set on getting the N97, but thanks to you Steve, rafe and these articles, I am official confused. One day I'm set on the nokia, the other day, an article like this pops out on the internet and I cant decide between the two. Nokia has the fantasic homescreen widgets, while sammy's homescreen is not anything to write about, but the rest of the GUI, sammy seems to have the upperhand.

Part of the reason I'm somewhat sceptical about this, apart from the lack of qwerty and the 16gb ( I'm an audiophile, music library is huuuge, and lets not forget that I also have to spare space for pics - I'm very snap happy for that matter, I usually come home from a day out with a couple of pics, sometimes with a 3 digit number, and then there's apps, and of course tons of vids I'm sure I'll load the sammy with) is the fact that I've never had anyone with a samsung in my family.

:edit: and the single LED annoys me a bit. on the one hand, the camera is clearly superior, but then I'll be taking the phone to trips with me to the clubs/gigs and take photos of my friends. In that case the Dual LED might help. Taking a stand alone camera is not an option since It's way too thick ( an oldish 5mp cybershot ). I mean I want to just carry a phone thats good enough to snap a pic in low-light conditions, while still feeling comfortable. having a wallet, a phone, keys and a bulky camera to a gig makes me look like there's something else in my pants...

Quicktime seems to be the only format that doesn't like to sync up the audio and video. VLC and WMP12 sync just fine.

Even with the relatively short time period between the two, there were noticeable software and performance improvements and we would expect this to continue up to the late April release date.

That was the date mentioned at MWC, but I think you could probably put that back to May for the first real availability with wider spread availability in June.

Which is it? Late April? Early May? June?

Seeing as how we're still waiting for a pass from the FCC, I'd say later rather than sooner, but still probably sooner than the N97. :icon14:

I was lead to believe that the audio playback sync issue was within the phone, but it's not. The playback is with external software players which isn't as relevant as a phone hardware issue!

Quicktime has been known to have MP4 playback issues for some time from many phone manufacturers (Nokia included) and for the uninitated, Windows Media player DOESN'T SUPPORT MP4 playback natively! Microsoft has never committed to support MP4 (or any variation) and they even have this disclaimer on their website.

As long as VLC, DIVx and other media players are supported there is at least a method to playback HD footage from the phone.

The audio playback sync issue that has gone on since the Innov8 isn't hardware related, but external software related, glad I understand that now.

Thanks for the review, unfortunately it doesn't seem like we'll be getting a US 3G variant anytime soon, but I'll knuckle up for one of these regardless and live with Edge as a consolation for the other excellent features this phone offers.

I'm disappoint this phrase
"Captured videos played back perfectly on the device (an impressive achievement in itself), but as Steve mentioned in his 'first impressions' piece there was an audio sync issue when viewing in Quicktime and Windows Media Player on the PC. However, using the open-source VLC resulted in perfect video playback. I'm not sure of the cause of this (likely a mis-step between video and audio encoding streams in the playing application, possibly caused by the formatting of the file), but it is something Samsung would do well to fix before the final release. Quicktime and Windows Media Player are mainstays of the PC and Mac worlds and work fine with HD video from other sources."

Main problems are players windows media player and quicktime NOT OMNIA HD VIDEOS!
All the others HD source in web are in h264,wmv,mpeg2, BUT NEVER IN MPEG4-VIDEO (format used by phones)..
Maybe wmp or quicktime can't manage very well mpeg4-video/aac muxing and sync, or maybe when there are dropped frame wmp or quicktime can't manage very well audio-video syncronization (different than VLC or others advanced players)..
For me this isn't a problem, because VLC is the most famous player in the world and main people use this player.
But if omnia hd video quality(and I hope also audio quality)will increase is better 🙄

I don't agree that the xenon flash isn't necessary and wouldn't make sense on this device, It should be a must!!! and heyyy xenon flash+led flash is possible, just ask sony ericsson 😉 ... at least they should have put dual led on board :/

i thought it had an hdmi doungle,, so no tv-ou too? what a shame!

Well Folks...as per my attention and observation,,,,,,,

no doubt that this phone could be the next king after so many years like N95 which for sure is the bestest device till now!!

wat good about samsung is that ,,,they have reallly pushed themselves into the markets with a lot of gr8 phones coming from them just like innovov8,Omnia,instinct so many...new items with a lot of different concepts and ideas..

na yaa...leave about the above of samsung,,,lets talk about SAMSUNG OMNIA HD,,,

The Coolest factors
:

1----GREAT SCREEN (ONE OF THE BEST TILL NOW)=3.7"

2.-----FIRST HD MOBILE VIDEO RECORDING ON 720dpi...thats a huge step in mobile entertainment

3.THE BEST THING ABOUT THE PHONE>>>

ITS OS YEAH ITS A SYMBIAN S60 5th...and this makes the phone really awesome with the influence of samsungs own UIQ a little bit...the
speed of operation and performance is better even then 5800 express.!!

as its realllys slugish sometimes,,,

4---THE COMPETITION FOR SONY ERICSON IDOU..

if the IDOU HAS SYMBIAN 5th EDITION I WOULD SURELY BUY THAT,,,

but not then the omnia is currently the best touchscreen phone
in market to come and is definitely the improved version of SAMSUNGS quality!!

i hope rest of us would appreciate if the news of launch and also pls continue the 3rd PART REVIEW VERY FAST,,i m excited to read further!!!!

can the video player support and play h264 MKV files?

please reply

dude.....about wat u said h264 mkv...i dont thing so they have tested it.....welll when it comes in the market... frames and sound as well as video quality is concerned!!!welll it plays the most common files but...flv,avi,rv,wmv even so and also divx and xvid so no problem in.we all will get to know....

one final verdict...

should i buy this phone before idou and nokias next big thing or should i wait\|!\

i reallly cant wait brothers!!!!!!

if don't support h264/mkv there is coreplayer (but it is necessary optimize it to use omnia hd hardware acceleration and not use only directdraw mode)

Its been a week since u havent posted the third part review of our favorite OMNIA HD>..

pls post it as soon as possible..

i m really excited

It would be a really gret phone, if IF IT WASN'T AMSUNG. I won't ever touch any Samsung or LG, even though they are high-spec. Bulit quality it very bad, softwrewise they are also very bad... And don't even try to compare Samsung or LG camera with equally specified camera from other manufacturers... It's the same with standard cameras, guess why Samsung is so cheap?
Because they are poor and don't care about the detail, that's why I on't understand their aproach to preoim products.. leave it to Sony Ericsson and Nokia.

You obviously never owned a Samsung phone, they made a lot of high quality phones. And why would you call Samsung POOR?

OMNIA HD VS IDOU VS N98
the omnia hd is the obvious choice really. if you discount the camera the idou is nothing compared to omnia hd. even if a camera is important to you, is the idou really worth it ?. i would have to agree with those who say either xenon/double LED/both combined. anyone found specs on n98 yet ? ive only seen pics from french nokia site.
