Planes, Trains and the Nokia 5800 - Ewan across the USA - part 9

16 replies · 3,526 views · Started 01 April 2009

Winding up his three week tour of the USA, taking in social media and gaming events, with a loan Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Ewan arrives back in chilly Scotland, dons half a dozen sweaters and sets about summing up his experiences in the last part of his video diary, below. Perhaps tellingly, he says he's tempted to get his own as his main smartphone. If you'd like to see more video diaries, do please comment and let Ewan know!

Thank's Ewan. Enjoyed every episode. Great future for this phone with firmware upgrades. MORE.......MORE. :icon14:

Really enjoyed the series.

Many thanks for you efforts (and to Steve and Rafe for site in general).

Also, I assume you'll be entering this to the Samsung "win an Omnia HD" competition ?

I think the 3 of you should be forced to compete with only one potential winner. Not fair, but enterraining 😊

Got to agree with the above Ewan. Very well done. Really enjoyed your reporting (and I never had a problem with the picture, the sound of the accent. I've endured enough E3 shows over the years to be able to pick out dialogue from 50 paces!). Shame it's got to end. But a great insight into the 5800. Think I'll hold out 'till the N97 and the E55 make an appearance though. Cheers

My iPhone first edition has crapped out, and I am getting my first Nokia 5800 I am very excited and these videos were great to know that I am getting a great phone can't wait.

Enjoyed the diaries. Recommend using this format in the future for other reviews, conferences, etc.

For the guys at nokia reading this (hope they are), I passed by the helsinki flagship store 3 times since last week to test the 5800... asked a few non-usual questions, but went away with no definitive answer... Really like the store and the possibility it offers to actually try phones for a long while (wish they could offer some chairs though, as I had to stand there fighting with the alarm cables which pulled the phone back to its holder)...
it is not only all bad... to my surprise, they had put some content in the 5800s, such as videos, music and even imaginary contacts, which really helped the testing... but I really wish the sales clerks would be more up-to-date.

Maybe you guys, experts, could help me with some questions...
- Is there a native VOIP functionality on the 5800? (not just possibility to install fring or similar, but a buit-in tool, which gives me the option to do an internet call when I highlight a number... nobody knew anything about that... the best answer I got: it should have cause my e71 has... still did not convince me...
- Is it possible to select more than 1 picture/video in the gallery and delete/send them together, or even contacts or other files (without having to go through menus - options->mark, options->mark, options->mark, etc)? I couldn't find a way do that at the store... Again, the sales clerk had to check the phone for 5min to look at me with the kind of face you know she s just not sure and say "I dont think that is possible, you have to mark all, and delete them all..."

- Is there a way to do copy & paste?

Another thing I did not succeed doing and not sure if it is possible (as I dont know if those phones at the store had the latest firmware). Nokia maps did not shift to landscape mode... Is that normal? Tried 2 different 5800s and it didnt shift in any of them...

would really appreciate your help...

hallo!
great different way of testing. rather then just specs vs. specs trying it out on the road.
what you think about a 5800 in a N-series or even the E(71) like design/build quality without the keyboard of the upcoming n97?
thanks!

I still think the 5800 is a testbed for the n97 .. but nice to see its found a home amongst the "street users" .. enjoyed Ewan's reports though they were filmed with the #1 video phone device .. still the n95 8G ..
Yes the firmware on the 5800 will be steadily upgraded .. I imagine it will get a serious shake-up prior to the N97's arrival.
Don't sweat on the iPhone's OS3 from what I've seen thusfar (sideways look at non-disclosure thing from Apple *cough*) it needs quite a bit more done .. so no competition there .. what does compete is the app-store .. really OVI needs to be a huge success to balance that.

Despite having a 5800 since it came out in Hong Kong I still found this series interesting and loved watching Ewans opinions of the device change as the series went on. I have one question though...

Ewan, have you turned the haptic feedback back on yet? I bet you have 😉

And, nice format, more please....

Afternoon everyone,

Glad you have all enjoyed this series of video shows - Rafe, Steve and I ware wokring out the best way to carry the format forwards. Rafe let Steve and I run with the idea, Steve took all my raw footage and added the editing and FX shots, it was very much a group effort.

It's not going to stop dead, but we are going to experiement a bit more. If you have any ideas how you'd like these organised and what style of content should feature, do let us know.

Right to some of those questions:

Actually I missed out the Omnia HD competition. But then I do have pictures, Phil...

Keefsloan: Audio has been a problem, both from the device and my vocals - sorry on the latter, and blame Nokia for no decent mic input for the former.

Dizlbdog: Glad the reviews aided the decision, do remember its a personal opinion of me though.

Mjbr; Not aware of any native voip, it's not something I do. I couldn;t see how to do a multiple select - no pencil key to hold down! COpy and paste is there when you highlight text in the entry interfaces. I tend to shift the auto rotate off, so pass on that last one.

Seki: of course touch is prototyped on the 5800, that's obvious 😊

Demowayne: Haptic feedback is still off. Never needed it on the Pilot 5000, the 5mx, the Revo, iPaw or any other touch devices; never felt it was needed by me here!

A small correction to your intro. The weather in Edinburgh has been fantastic for the last week. I don't believe Ewan will have required additional sweaters. He should save them for next week.

Normally I would be fine, but Texas was 30-36 celsius while away, and my body is bloody freezing!!! But I much rather this cooler northern air than feeling hot air get sucked into my lujngs.

Yes, a good successful series. Well done.

I too hope there will be more of this ilk.

I forget where the mic is on an N95, but I wonder if there's anything you can do to make it more directional - something as simple as taping a bit of carefully-folded card to the back behind the mic, so that it reflects the sound appropriately...well, you get the idea.

Max.

One of the best things about the 5800? Integration with iTunes. It's the first and the only (presumably until the N97) Nokia device [ducks for cover] that will play music videos that I've bought DRM Free from the iTunes Store - though not films (for now) as the DRM free thing doesn't seem to apply to them - and music and sync everything nicely over - even Album Art. It's almost as slick and fast as sync'ing an iPod (well, maybe not as fast). I know that most people here won't be bothered about Mac integration and iPhone and stuff, but the way things are going it won't be long (as a non-gamer) before I can ditch my iPods. Things have come such a long way since PsiWin (sorry!).

Tim

Really enjoyed the this series of videos guys, good balance of analysis and entertainment. Still sniggering about the filofax podcast though, that would have made a great video. Good to hear from another Nokia fan still using a paper based GTD system, couldn't live without my Moleskin 😊

Would love to see/hear an interview/conversation between Ewan and Sarah Lacey, how zany would that be!
